Default how will you do artillery crews?

I would like the the artillery crews to be made of proper units. You could have a more expensive hastati unit with artillery pieces instead of a simple crew like in vanilla. This will allow the artillery to be useful after it have used up all of its ammo.

This was actually discussed but we are not sure yet as it would be rather OP but definitely something I want to try in the later Roman period. Scorpions themselves will be monsters on the battlefield with a high rate of fire and around 6 artillery pieces. All artillery will be less accurate however but still do enough to push back units on the flanks.

Is there any way to build siege equipment like Onagers and the like as part of a Besieging force? Maybe unlocked via an army "build" like in Rome 2? Failing that, perhaps increasing their ammunition allowance while in the besieging stance. That would allow an army to spend a couple of seasons accruing boulders prior to their assault (perhaps in diminishing returns to represent the ongoing siege escalation)

People have mentioned the reload feature; is there any way to do that with Slingers, (to represent them stooping for stones), but perhaps have their attack (or accuracy) lowered with those stones to represent their haphazard nature rather than shaped pellets - if of course that's accurate.

Again we just started talking about adding ballistas and the like to siege building equipment instead of being battlefield units. Should be doable.

And yes its very possible to have slingers do that, though we will probably give them a period of time where they move slowly to show they are picking up stones.

Sounds good. While I'm spamming ideas, to give the defenders a bit of a boost, perhaps slowing increasing the accuracy of long ranged missile units or artillery as they begin to get used to the ranges required (similar to how in Kingdom of Heaven, Legolas laid out coloured stones for fields of fire?)

Well there is a ammo replenishment feature in Atilla so artillery could have a option like that or something if that's realistic maybe with a resupply system.

I think the only units I had planned to allow to replenish their ammo are slingers and parthian horse archers.

It's funny that you bring this idea up, yeah. It's been under discussion but we haven't decided about it yet. As Petellius said, Scorpions will have 6 pieces per unit, whereas onagers and other heavy artillery will be limited to 3 or 4. We're also redoing their spacings; there won't be the same distance between small artillery pieces as large ones. So, they'll be more compact and should fit better with your lines.

That might happen. But like with all missile units, it could have a too prominent impact on balance. Generally a feature comes down to how the AI uses it and to what degree this differs from the player.

I hope you can balance it with the cost and decreasing the size of the crew.

i like the idea of the replenishment ability, i always wondered why the onager teams cant just grab more boulders with the rest of the crewmen, if that makes sense. either way, when it comes to the AI, i never give them the chance to run out of ammo anyway. swarming it with cav is the highest priority in battle

    Don't think that's possible I'm afraid.

it would be fantastic if onagers and such like were only for sieges.

I definitely don't like the idea of siege crews just being a unit of line troops slapped onto an artillery piece. Makes absolutely zero sense.

Artillerists was a profession even into the imperial era for Rome.

Sure, onagers are simpler to operate than ballistae and scorpions, but you still need to have someone trained to use it effectively.

I was more thinking for scorpions as apparently each century had their own scorpion. While you are correct in this it is difficult to show in game a unit with attached artillery pieces without making them all standard troops.

Unless you could somehow tie scorpions into a deployable for Romans in imperial times?

Like what happens with siege defences, but in any battle a roman army gets into.

That might be 'slightly' op though. I certainly like the idea though.

I do want to make deployables actually ing useful. So I could look into that
