Quarters of Raymar Lefford

Raymar had arrived in King's Landing with a small retinue of trusted men: advisors, bodyguards, associates, assets. Numbering no more than twenty in all, the group had taken up residence in a large compound located near the Old Gate, among the better off dwellings in the city, though far from the Red Keep.

Sent by the new Lord Lannister to establish a presence for the Westerlands in the city, he had a daunting task: a former Green in a city dominated by Blacks. He wasn't without potential allies, however: the Low Greens would certainly welcome the arrival of a prominent nobleman from one of the former Green strongholds and the Burghers too would not be unwelcoming towards anyone who was once an enemy of the current Monarchy, depending of course on that former enemy's precise opinions on the rightful extent of the Crown's powers. The religious fanatics would welcome anyone willing to shave their head and wander around in rags chanting scripture, but that wasn't going to happen...

His mission was varied: keep an eye on the Crown's activities, gain influence in the city for the Westerlands, forge alliances for House Lefford, and of course increase his own prestige and stature within the realm.

He is shown into a room where Raymar sat awaiting him.

"What does a Master of Ships need with a man like myself?" asked Raymar in a nonchalant tone as Velaryon entered.

Corlys admired the room before sitting down, "You are the first Westerlander to come to King's Landing following the war. I think its important we put behind us what happened, so I've come to see if there is anything I can do for you." He wasn't sure what to make of the words, but Lucian had the support of the majority of the council, and Corlys needed to look elsewhere for allies.

"The west has been involved in... internal, issues," replied Raymar, "the new Lord Lannister has seen fit to send someone to the capital to discover what the new post-war settlement looks like. Tell me, Lord Velaryon, how are things in the city?"

Raymar already understood from his time here that four factions were essentially competing for control over the city: the Red Keep, the Merchants, former Greens hidden among the smallfolk in the vast slums that comprised most of the city, and a hardline religious faction that wanted the High Septon to replace the King as the centre of power.

Being a representative of a prominent Green Kingdom, Raymar's feelers had already reported to him that elements within that faction were eager to meet him, alongside overtures from the mercantile faction who hoped the son of the now late Harmund Lefford would be sympathetic to his father's business connections. He'd met with neither group, yet. Best to see what the Red Keep was up to first, as they were undoubtedly the strongest of the competing groups at present.

Corlys chuckled without humour, "We are having our own internal issues at the moment. Merchants, fanatics, common people - all are making life for people in this city extremely difficult." Corlys avoided mentioning too much until he could discern Raymar's loyalty. "But enough about the city, I want to thank you in person, thanks I hope you'll extend to House Lannister, for making the right choices during the war. I hope we can all profit from the wise-choices your Lords made."

Enough about the city? I'm here for the bloody city.

"By acting the coward,"said Raymar in a flat, dismissive, tone, "The most aggressive act he ever sanctioned was letting someone else raid the Riverlands for him: he punished anyone else who dared act like there was a war to be won. I'd think carefully before thanking the cub for having a coward for a father. I'm here because the Rock's new policy is to be less... isolationist: to represent the Westerlands before the new regime. Can't wallow in defeat forever, after all."

"Whatever the case, you have my thanks.." He paused, thinking things over, "If you aim is to represent your interests in the new regime, my advice would be present yourself before the King, as a formality, and helping to deal with these riots would go a long way to earning the support of many in this city."

The riots, ah yes, killed a Queen that an entire Green faction couldn't kill: even Smallfolk occasionally produce game changers.

"I'll go before the King at the earliest opportunity," said Raymar, "He should know the Westerlands is prepared to work constructively with the new regime."

Reaching out to the Burgher and Low Greens will have to wait for now. The strength of the Crown must be assessed first...
