    Default "Fighting to death"

At first: Awesome mod... especially considering that the current version is still some kind of an early access beta.

I also want to appologize for my bad English, though I am willing to do my best:

Didn't want to post this in the bug section because it seems more like some kind of pathfinding issue to me.

I recently started a custom battle facing several stacks of Epeirote phalangites with a mixed roman army. My Hastati were able to break enemy moral after a full frontal assault while my cavalry was simply threatening the enemy's flanks.

I expected at least some of the phalangites to rout. Instead they were all stuck in their "fighting to death"-mode although they were only attacked in the front and coud have easily escaped in the opposite direction. It was then I realized that maybe a dozen hastati from different units were stuck behind or in between the enemy's ranks. Pulling back the whole unit didn't help as it did not break the engagement because of the mentioned dozen who seemed to have entered berserking mode and didn't respond to any commands. Switching guard mode on/off didn't help either. I even moved my cavalry and every single unit of hastati as far from the enemy as possible leaving the room to flee in every possible direction, but they were still harrassed by a few mad hastati soldiers... and decided in favour of a heroic last stand.

The only remaining way to win the battle would have been to speed up the battle and wait untill every single Epeirote soldier was killed...

Well units fighting to death ussually tend to die quite quickly in my playthroughs. Havent had your problem though. In my case they seem to enter this state when they do really have not way to escape. And when they do they swiftly change to rout state.

We will either find a way, or make one.

Noticed this too. What concerns me more is how utterly inept these units become while in that state: as it stands one can wipe out 200 men while suffering only a handful of losses - why bother letting them flee when making them fight is painless?

As far as I know, they don't fight back at all. They just kind of die...or maybe they become prisoners now? I don't see any issue really. It would be nice for them to actually fight, but I don't think any of this behavior can be modified.

That specifically was coded into the exe by CA ever since RTW and probably before, so we cannot modify that at this time.

All that was possible was improving pathfinding recognition so that units could figure out where they could escape to more efficiently.
