Default New kids on the block

Life wasn't fair. Vernon knew this but he wondered if the merchants around Fishmonger's square did. He was there to remind them.

Vernon had divided his hired muscle in squads of a dozen men each and had sent them to "offer" protection to the fair businessmen who lived near the Mud Gate. He was in personally in charge of the most important one; his informants had signaled one merchant of importance. His name was Regis and he had ties to the local guilds.

He calmly knocked the door of Regis' establishment and waited.

    OoC:
The men I've hired don't really come into play until Thursday but for RPs sake (I am bored and I want to RP now ) I wondered if I could just immediately have them, only for this RP

OOC: Not entirely sure how to go about this, Pink. Mind explaining some of it?

OoC: Oh, my mistake. Should've explained.

My character's aim is to stablish an extortion business, offering protection to the businesses on Fishmonger's square for a fee. Like the mob does in every mob movie! But I need a moderator to roll and moderate the whole situation.

After knocking on the door it was finally opened by a big burly man with a bald head, obviously an enforce of some sorts. He looked at the man with no interest, keeping an eye on the more troublesome patrons or maybe even wishing just to be somewhere else. He gestures for the man to enter, and is show into a large common room area with roaring hearths providing warmth against the Autumn chills. At the back of the room is much more amiable looking innkeeper, chatting away with merry customers as they order more drinks. He sees you enter and calls you over to the bar, "Hello friend, what can I do for you? I'm afraid you'll have to buy at least one drink if you want to stay." It was in a friendly enough tone, coming from a bumbling men perhaps almost atypical of an innkeeper.

"Aye, 'tis only fair I suppose."

Vernon entered the stablishment and was closely followed by his henchmen. They all sat down and ordered a pint of ale.
While the men drinked, Vernon approached the innkeeper

"See friend, I've got a business proposition to make to ye. That's the reason me and me lads are 'ere"

The innkeeper eyed over the these 'lads' with caution, they looked like the type that could cause trouble if they wanted too as Vernon spoke, before making a hurried reply. "If it is a business deal you want you'll need to talk to Regis, he deals with all that stuff. I'm just the innkeeper." He gestured towards the a door at the back of the room, "Knock on that and tell them you've had the green light from Bertie... just you mind you, those lads of yours we'll need to stay out front here. Regis likes to deal with people on a one-to-one basis."

    Vernon nodded in compliance

    "Aye, I understand."

He walked with difficulty, due to his lame-leg, towards the door at the back of the room. He then knocked and said

"Bertie's said I am allowed in."

OOC: Shank said I can take it from here

    IC:

Standing by the door was a dullard, built like an outhouse. Two pig eyes squinted at the lame-legged man, before giving an affirmative nod. The door opened, revealing a portly man sat at a table with a few other men, playing what looked to be some odd card game. Regis did not notice the man, merely raising his finger upwards. Tutting at the selection of cards before him, he grinned, and threw down what must have been his proverbial ace in the hole, evidenced by the pot of money he gathered into himself. Looking up and grimacing at the new arrival, the oversized merchant spoke in a slightly bemused tone.

"Come to play, have you? Don't remember inviting any cripples to my card game."

You're not so pretty either, fat .

"Nay, I did not come to play. I've got no interest in joining your posh playboy club either."

He sat down in an empty chair, without waiting for invitation. He then came closer to the table

"I've come because I've been told you are the big fish here, all merchants in the area answer to you, that you represent them in the guild. Am I wrong?"

Fat Regis pursed his lips, and glanced at the other men around the table. All of them looked like merchants, though not all looked like the clean kind...

"Is it any of your in' business, is the question I would ask."
Regis said, slightly annoyed. "Why have you come here, then? Seen as you're so interested in my business."

Vernon smiled, revealing several rotten teeth.

"Ah, that's where you're wrong, my fat friend. It is my business now, you see? This city's going through a very turbulent time as of lately, as I am sure you've all realized. What I offer you, and through you, to all the merchants of Mud Gate, is protection. Me fine lads, all of 'em very capable, they'll make sure you are safe from any unrest or undesirables, in exchange of 1/3 of your yearly income. A fair deal, considering what the situation is."

He waited a second to let the men digest what they had just heard and then he continued

"And I urge you to accept this deal. This city is a dangerous place after all."

Regis' eyes narrowed as he studied Vernon carefully, taking in every small detail of the man.

"Who are you, and why should I listen to you just because you have a few brutes at my door? I'm a guild merchant, son. I don't just kiss the arse of any er to walk through my door."

"Vernon of Rayonet, Army Group Center, Alba Division, Red Riders. Veteran of the Dance of the Dragons. Oo-ing-rah"

Ah, those were the days. Were it not for the lame-leg Vernon would still ride with his men, fighting for the best bidder.
But no, he was there, in that outhouse, with those shady traders. And his patience was running out.

"Indeed you are a ploughing merchant, who's fat of so much eating and not so much fighting. So you'd do well to listen to me. Either you pay me and me lads or you'll not live to see next year's carnival parade, guildmaster."

    Base Chance: 5/20
Modifiers: +3 (charisma), +2 (intimidation), +2 (armed men)
    Final chance: 12/20
    Roll: 2 (success)

Regis sighed, and massaged his temples. The other merchants stared at either Vernon or Regis, and you could cut through the tension with a knife it hung so thick in the air. One of Regis's employees scurried through from the bar, whispered something in his ear, and scurried away.

"How much do you want?" He asked, in a resigned tone.

"I've already told ye, a third of your gains. Yearly."

OoC: Can't honestly figure how much that would be without being overly generous with myself , discuss it with the mods and then tell me

OOC: Well how about we say... 5000 dragons?

Regis frowned, leaning back in his seat as he counted the numbers up in his head.

"Nay, can't afford that. I can give you a fifth, each year. Times are too tough to be handing out a third of me profits to every ploughin' soldier that walks through my door."

OoC: I'd starve with that. Less than a level 1 asset. 10k-15k or death

    "A quarter."

    OOC: Alright. Ten it is.

Eyes wandering to his compatriots, the merchant nodded in relief.

"Alright. A quarter, then. But you better protect me from those whoresons, Vernon. Ploughing eaters think I'm hiding Blacks in my bar."

"Aye. I am an honest man, you've got naught to fear for. Unless you are indeed hiding Blacks in that belly of yours"

Vernon chuckled and got up to leave.

With a venomous smile, Regis watched Vernon leave, and sat silent for a while.

    "ing son of a whore."
He said, finally, under his breath. "Ploughin shite better keep his word." The other merchants merely stared or shook their heads in disbelief; things seemed to go from bad to worse in this deathtrap of a city.
