Default The Ventures of a Justman

God's Eye was the largest lake within the Riverlands, its isle was the most sacred and holy ground of the Old Faith for it was here, upon the Isle of Faces, that the Children of the Forest and the First Men made a pact. A pact between one another that would hundreds of years of conflict between Man and Creature in the world before the light of the Seven came to Westeros. This lake was a part of the large High Lordship that belonged to the rulers of Harrenhal, presently House Strong. There were five vassals sworn to Harrenhal; House Wode of Shoreham, House Blanetree of Esgaroth, House Vance of Atranta, House Ryger of Willow Wood and House Goodsbrook of Goodsbrook. All five houses were sworn as vassals to House Strong of Harrenhal. Yet with the war came tragedy as Old Lyonel and much of his family died in a great fire at Harrenhal; whispers speaking that it was caused by the wicked Brandon Snow and his fellow Northerners.

With this great fire, House Strong's power was greatly weakened. Their sole heir lying in the hands of Lady Jeyne, the eldest surviving child of Harwin Strong, also known as Breakbones. With Lady Jeyne to be the heiress of Harrenhal, Ser Harys of Justman rode off to gain aid and allegiance of the surrounding houses for the Lady of Harrenhal. He understood that nobles would not take the idea of a female overlord too kindly, thus he needed to ensure that Lady Strong was given a firm foundation in which she could rule. And with that, Ser Harys rode for his first object, House Goodsbrook to the West...

The dark-haired Harys Justman rode with a hundred light cavalry to the walls of Goodsbrook. They were the closest of Harrenhal's vassals, besides House Wode of Shoreham that lied to the eastern shore of God's Eye. Harys rode up to the walls of House Goodsbrook, the cavalry flew banners of House Strong upon their standards. In a ways, Harys saw this not only as a means of strengthening House Strong but to also make a name for himself and his own household. With that happy thought in mind, Ser Harys rode to the gate with a mounted bannerman and spoke to the sentries.

Hail, gatesmen! I have been charged by Lady Jeyne of House Strong, daughter of Ser Harwin Strong, granddaughter of the Old Lord, Lyonel Strong, and heiress to Harrenhal, to come and speak with Lord Goodsbrook on her behalf. May we enter and speak with his gracious lordship?

The gates of the small keep are open and Harys is led through a warren of twisting passages to a small antechamber where Lord Goodsbrook waits. Lord Goodsbrook was a large fat man who had not marched to war when the Strongs called electing the send his brother in his stead. He studies the young knight carefully, "And may I have the honor of knowing who graces my hall?" he asks studying Harys.

Harys walks into the small keep of House Goodsbrook and approaches the rather large Lord Goodsbrook. His figure reminded him of the many Essosi merchants who called themselves princes due to their riches. In Westeros, Harys suspected it was mostly because of the food and lack of exercise. The Justman bows to the Lord of the keep, showing his manners before nobility.

I am Ser Harys the Bold of House Justman, swornsword of House Tully and serving as emissary for Her Ladyship, Jeyne of House Strong. Her Ladyship sends you greetings and hopes you are well, My Lord.

The man lets out a booming laugh upon hearing the knights names. It slowly subsides yet his mirth is still plain on his face. "Ser... Justman was it?" He says his many chins waggling as he speaks. The Justman were long dead after all and this was no more then a pretender to their former glory, but Tully seems to have taken them in and there had to be a reason for that. "You come on behalf of Lady Jeyene and house Tully? Well then deliver your message."

Ser Harys was aware of insults and doubts that would come from his name. He knew who he was and that's what mattered in the end. The Justman bows his head once more before speaking to Lord Goodsbrook.

Lady Jeyne of House Strong, sole heiress to Harrenhal, wishes to ask for aid from among her good vassals. The Northerners and the great fire that took the lives of her kinsmen has left the stores of Harrenhal bleak and dry. Rotten grain and the remains of burnt flour were found within its stores. Her Ladyship hopes that House Goodsbrook could supply some rations for the troops protecting her and for her household so that all may be fed.

Harys pauses for a moment before speaking further on the matter.

Lady Jeyne also seeks to reaffirm ties to House Goodsbrook, as well as the rest of her noble vassals. House Strong has remained firm against the brink of extinction. The Lady knows she will need all the help she can get to not only rebuild her home and family, but to rule as fairly and just as her grandfather, the Old Lord Lyonel. And to ensure she can do such a thing, she will need not only loyalty, but all the of her subjects that they can give.

Lord Goodsbrook grows silent he knew of what happened in Harrenhal. It had been disgraceful "Ser Justman," he says in a quiet resigned voice. "My house marched when her father called my men bleed and died for Harrenhal. What more does the Lady Jeyne want from me?"

Harys would calmly respond to Lord Goodsbrook.

Food, water and your loyalty. She needs food to feed her household, water to quench their thirsts and the loyalty of her vassals to rebuild and thrive once more. War is over, now is the time to look to one another and help each other.

Goodsbrook sighed, "The real question is how much Rebuilding will cost my house Ser. Grain barges can sail between Goodsbrook and Harrenhal at once, but the rest well that costs coin."

Harys offers but a smile to the Lord to assure him.

Her Ladyship only asks for food and loyalty, that is all, My Lord. With those in hand, she will take it upon herself to rebuild with the support of her vassals ensuring that the rebuilding is done upon firm foundations. No gold is needed to, your Lordship, only your loyalty and whatever aid can be given to the sole heiress of Harrenhal.

The knight reaches into his pocket and pulls out a coin, showing it to Lord Goodsbrook.

A merchant can make a thousand more with just one coin. Just as any measure of aid can go a long ways to rebuilding.

"Tell Lady Strong I will renew my oaths in person," he says with a sigh. "I have obeyed House Strong loyally my whole life as did my father before me. That will not change."

Your word is more than enough to elate Lady Strong of your loyalty to House Strong, My Lord. I will deliver such news to Her Ladyship and she will be most delighted.

Ser Harys bows his head once more to Lord Goodsbrook. It was a good beginning step, Harys was certain of it.

As for the food, My Lord, I have brought a hundred good riders. They will happily protect your convoy to Harrenhal if need be without raising your own soldiers to do the work.

"Then go Ser Justman, tell Lady Strong the good news." He turns to a servant. "Go see ten wagons are filled with Grain to return to Harrenhal for the Lady Strong and be quick about it."

A hundred riders, led by Ser Harys of House Justman, ride up to the walls of Shoreham where House Wode ruled as a knightly house sworn to Harrenhal and House Strong. They had been a knightly house sworn to the rulers of Harrenhal and the region for many generations. Now Ser Harys rode as he did for Goodsbrook; to renew their oaths of fealty to House Strong and perhaps gain the favors and attention of Lady Strong. Harys rides up with a banner carrier who held the standard of House Strong to the walls of Shoreham castle.

Hail, sentries! I have come forth to speak with the noble knights of Shoreham and House Wode on behalf of Lady Jeyne, heiress of Harrenhal and Lady of House Strong.

Ser Harys is let in to the keep and led to the private solar of Lord Wode. When Ser Justman enters Lord Wode looks up brightening and calls out to the servants, "Bring this man bread and salt we have a guest." After a few moments he turns back to Wode, "May I have your name good ser?"

"A Justman," he says raiseing an eyebrow. "One day you have to tell me how long dead house ends up in the service of Lord Tully and Lady Strong." He pauses as bread and salt are brought out to Justman. Guest right was given.
