To play on my favorite is Helms Deep!
The best designed... I'd say is Minas Tirith.

Minas Tirith is my favorite. It looks awesome, it's fun to play there.
I like Black Gate also.
Osgiliath, it's such a masterpiece both in terms of gameplay and looks.
Have to agree. In my current Gondor campaign with a slightly custom MOS 1.7 it is under constant assault from huge stacks of Mordor, and is a very fun battlefield, and feels very movie-like to me. Minas Titith and Pelennor with the city behind it are a close second, though. Sure is hard to siege it, and fun to defend! I also quite like Henneth Annun, for being a pretty unique settlement, and the Dwarvern holds for being simply amazing to look at.
I kind of like all of them, though! Especially now we finally have totally custom Dwarvern and Elven settlements in the game.
For atmosphere/immersion I really like some of the small ones like Amon Sul and Esargoth.
For gameplay, I agree Osgiliath collectively has the most strategy to it, with multiple entrances, bridge, city, and field combat positions available depending on your strength.
For looks I like Edoras and Minas Tirith.
Osgiliath is gorgeous! Its definitely in the top 3!
Amon sul is beautiful & minas tirith is great overall...
I havent played all the custom maps im sure. Playing the dwarven custom settlements is a beauty most of the time, as the defenders finally have a nice choke to stop the enemy hordes from outflanking you. As for Osgiliath, beautiful map with lots of tactical situations to exploit and apply, as well as the deployment areas. Minas Tirith is unfortunately a map with a lot of potential that just fails overall thanks to the worthless archers messing everything up (more a problem with the MTW2 archers than anything, but still), although Helms Deep is a nice battlefield.
Minas Tirith looks amazing but I sort of wish there were actually seven concentric walls with seven gates. Right now attacking is too hard because the "building" types are indestructible making the entire thing a defensive chokehold with one way through.
Minas Tirith. No matter what Faction I've played, I have yet to loose as a Defender of that Gorgerous Giant Masterpiece of a Fortress.

That's because it's a massive choke point.
In terms of immersion/design, my favourite is and will always be Minas Morgul (gotta love the creepy atmosphere, the Bridge and the ruined insides of the Dead City)
In terms of gameplay, I'll keep Helm's Deep though - so many possibilities ...
To be honest, Leo deserves all the credit in the world (and the known universe), because his alternative patch sub-mod has all new settlement models for towns, cities, and large cities, plus castles and fortresses (different models for Gondor, Eriador/Arnor, and the elven factions). His models are the best, hands down!Plus, how could you disagree with that adorable picture of a chihuahua dog in his avatar? You'd be heartless to do that.
(At least I think that's a chihuahua.)
