Lucian Arryn rides forward alone just out of bowshot.

"I invite the ranking leader of this garrison to come forth and treat with me under a banner of truce." He was confident nobody within Oldtown lacked the respect for the laws and customs of Westeros to invite the disfavor of the gods by acting violently under a banner of truce.

The gates slowly opened and two riders come forth and ride to Lucian Arryn. Upon the saddles were Ser Jon Buckler, a member of Jaehaerys's Kingsguard and Lord Hightower. The pair came forth to within a good distance that they could talk. Ser Jon Buckler knew it was over and there was only one option out of this.

If you have come to end this war, Lucian of House Arryn, then I will say that we will only surrender to Prince Daemon or the Queen herself.

Lord Commander Criston Cole watched from the battlements. The war was not looking good. Everyday he seethed in his chambers, ruing the day Viserys had named Rhaenyra his heir. What stopped you from naming Aegon? He had no bastards, no dishonourable acts to his name. There would have been peace. But no, the old king had chosen incompetence as his legacy. Incompetence and bloodshed.

I will not surrender, he grunted. I cannot surrender.

He would live a life as a Hedge Knight if needs be, if it meant that he did not give the b---- Queen the satisfaction of seeing him kneel. His life was forfeit in her eyes.

    ------

    @Valemen

Willem looked towards the city, surveying it with a practiced eye. For too long he had been away from the large cities of the realm, too long wasting away at Strongsong. One day this war was going to end and Lord Belmore knew that he would come to miss it. Miss victory.

Twisting to look at his liege lord, the Lord of Bells bowed in his saddle.

Lucian remained stoic. He offered no offense, no insult, but he did not treat with them as friends. "Lord Hightower, Ser." He began in greeting to the two. "I am named Hand of the Queen, and I negotiate on her behalf. Although I am aware you may wish to deal with others for personal reasons, I remind you to consider we are but three souls of thousands who stand to lose everything. Think of the implications for the Kingdoms." He lowered the Black flag he carried. Was it in salute? Or just a tired arm?

"Here are my terms. All Targaryens present within Oldtown will become my prisoners, but shall be treated as their rank accords with all due respect for transport back to King's Landing. The Queen shall decide their fate. The garrison will stand down and other troops shall disperse. They shall be allowed to leave in peace. Oldtown will not be harmed by my troops."

Lucian took a sterner tone. "Be warned. Even if you kill me and destroy this army, one even larger will take its place. The Westerlands have deserted you, the Riverlands have been purged of your supporters and even now Green keeps in the Reach are under siege or being stormed and taken. You are alone and isolated, and face an onslaught you cannot hope to beat back indefinetely."

Lucian did not expect they would surrender, but he had to offer them the option.

Ser Buckler looks calmly at the one who called himself Hand of the Queen. He listens to the terms calmly before speaking once more to Lucian of House Arryn.

And I do not trust anyone's word but that of the Queen or Prince Daemon's involving the safety of Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, the children of the late Aegon the Elder as well as the surrender of our cause. Even though this war is at its end, Lord Hand, I believe formality still exists and if the enemy requests something or someone, then it is the polite way to ascend to their request. Otherwise, you will lose face for not being honorable in your conduct as a member of House Arryn and as the Lord Hand.

He goes quiet for a moment before speaking further.

    Terms posted here earlier.

An empty threat he would not dignify with a response. These people seemed desperate. "I will speed word, but you will remain under siege until such time as I receive commands from the Queen or you surrender under the terms offered."

He pointed to the walls. "If need be I will personally lead the assault on the walls through arrow and dragon's fire. The wrath of the Queen is coming - I am but the harbinger."

Lucian nodded. "You have my word. As such, I accept your surrender. Deliver the garrison for disarmament and dispersal. A guard will be arranged for the Targaryens. Open the gates of Oldtown and allow my men entry in order to secure the cooperation of those within. Speed word to your allies in the field to disperse, as well. I will not make that last part a condition of my protection, as you have no control over the actions of others, but it will aid your position once you are in front of the Queen if you do all you can now to mitigate losses." Lucian paused. "Where is Halaena? Where is Vhagar?"

Ser Buckler did not understand the usage of such force. Oldtown was willing to surrender and the Greens ready to end this war. Yet this upstart Lord Hand wanted power and the ability to use it. What a belligerent man...

Fine...you will get all you want, Lord Hand. Oldtown is a city willing to surrender, but we will let your soldiers force and secure cooperation within it's walls.

Ser Jon pauses for a moment at the mention of Helaena and Vhagar.

Lady Helaena and Prince Aemond are within the city. We will ask them to come out willingly from Hightower where the Jaehaerys and Jaehaera reside. You may not enter that keep without the strict permission of Lord Hightower. For that is his home, not mine.

He whips his horse around to return to the city.

Now while I leave you to your orders while I prepare the Prince and Princess for their trip to King's Landing. Be aware though that they are human and not prizes, Lord Hand. I hope you will keep your word on treating as befitting their station as Prince and Princess. For royalty still do rank above all Lords, defeated or not. It is until the paper is signed that they will be able to live normal lives without the burden of crowns and subjects.

"May the gods strike me down if any harm befall them." He swore, solemnly. "Though be warned, anything less than full capitulation from the occupants of Oldtown will result in continued siege. Those who surrender will be accepted and escorted, but I will not have my army turn its back on a hostile castle. As for Lord Hightower, send him forth or someone to speak on his behalf to arrange my entry into the city." Lucian looked slightly relieved that the Greens seemed to be cooperating. Still, the war was not over yet.

"And Oldtown will not be openimg our gates to Arryn men or any loyal to the Black Queen." said Lord Hightower stoically. "Your charges will be handed over to you but no invading force will enter my city. Remember, your Queen still has enemies beyond the Narrow Sea and they happen to be friends of mine."

Ser Buckler does not give a response and disappears into the city. He lets Lord Hightower deal with everything else involving his city and keep.

Meanwhile, Ser Buckler prepares the departure of Jaehaerys and Jaehaera. He kept their juvenile dragons and Jaehaerys's relatively unknown dragon egg in the keep of the Hightowers, hidden from the view of the Vale army. The three hundred Crownland soldiers that escorted them here would be their personal escort back to the capital. All members of the Council of Regents are asked to cooperate and surrender.

"This seems like something less than a surrender, Lord Hightower. Do you intend to bend the knee?" Lucian asked, a bit confused. "Beware, if you do not bend the knee and abide by my terms you may soon find yourself in a much poorer bargaining position." The Sea Snake will be here soon, and with close to 100,000 allies at his back, Lucian felt confident that even powerful Oldtown could be laid low.

"There is a difference between bending the knee Lord Arryn and surrendering." replied Lord Hightower in a calm but serious tone. "No foreign soldier shall enter my city as long as I stand. Are you aware Lord Arryn that you and your army are trapped between 50,000 Reachmen. Are you aware Lrod Arryn that a fleet carrying over 30,000 men are preparing to set sail from Essos at my command to strike agaisnt your undefended homelands." he said hinting at the presence of the Kingdom of the Three Daughters who were no friend to Daemon Targaryen. "What will your men due when their homes are ravaged and they are powerless to stop it? Will they continue to fight? I think not. Or what would they say, when the High Septon himself, stands before us, decrying at such foolishness. While the lords may not be so easily swayed by his holiness, your soldiers are. Who are they to challenge the word of the man who speaks with the Seven directly?"

He gave the Lord Hand a few minutes to think of what was just said before he spoke again
"The Hightower will bend the knee Lord Arryn but it will be up to you to decide whether or not that bending will be a bloody one. It'll be up to you to determine whether or not it's worth it to march armies into my city or merely await for your Queen to arrive so that I may bend the knee."

Lucian gave a low laugh. This Hightower was a salty bastard, but he kept his composure. "Empty threats, Lord Hightower. I have killed men for less offenses than threatening my family." He clenched his fist. "But I would not need to lift a finger, would I?" He turned his head slightly. "Oldtown is an impressive fortress, but it pales in comparison to the Bloody Gate, to the Eyrie itself! The walls would be breached only when the corpses in the breach could provide an ascent to the others!" He raised his voice. "Any who would dare assault the Vale will not live to speak of their catastrophic mistake." He cresencoed into a final threat. "My lands would be merely burned at the fringes while Oldtown was laid low, left but a burned out relic like Old Valyria before any of mine own would be threatened by a curved Essosi blade from across the sea! Fortunately for you my interests are not represented in this decision, only that of my Queen. I cannot compromise the political situation."

He turned his horse so the backside faced Hightower. "Prepare to bend the knee, my lord. And fear the day you ever see an Arryn across the field of battle again. There shall be no quarter for your insult." He spurred his horse forward to his own camp, resisting the urge to give the order of a general assault. Some men don't know when they're beaten.

ooc: thank you for not being sycophantic. We need some rivalries to survive
