Medieval II: Total War, crashing constantly?

Hi, so i just bought this game on the steam sale, it's very fun and addicting, but it just wont stop crashing. What exactly should/can i do to stop it? When i mean crash, i don't just mean the game closes, i mean my whole computer practically breaks, and i have to power it off by pushing the button. I know it's not an issue with my hardware, simply because out of the 90-100 games i've played on this pc, this game is the ONLY game to crash with such frequency (6 times in 9 hours of gameplay), and in-fact, the only game to ever actually crash on this pc. I also bought Rome: Total War nearly a year ago and it never once crashed, and still doesn't (like literally every other game i've ever played). Any help or ideas would be much appreciated, thanks.

Also, i played Total War: ROME II, which is a much newer and better looking game graphics wise (i didn't like it though), and it never once crashed either. So it is very confusing that an old game with meh graphics is crashing.
