    Default Unit levels

    Hello all,

How do unit levels work? I think it's indicated by the chevrons on the unit card. I have an army that I've had from the beginning and the units have one or no chevrons. This is my king's army who's fought a number of wars. Then I have a new general with a newer army and the units in it have two chevrons ( unit 2). I thought these meant experience.

A lot of these topics, I don't know where to find info on.

Chevrons are experience and they represent training. Chevrons get watered down by taking losses in battle and then replenishment occurs with new recruits, probably why your king's army is low.

You can get chevrons from a champion agent being in the army, general skills, army traditions, characters attached to a general and a few others. You probably have one of those with your newer army.

Experience and training. Units gain ranks by killing enemy units or being trained by a champion, but can also lose them if they take too many loses and have to dilute themselves with green recruits to replenish their numbers. There are also various ways to increase the initial rank of units when they are first trained, reflecting more comprehensive training.

Does it serve a real purpose? From what I observe it changes the values most visible where they are most useless - melee defense for archers e.g. But for my core units as e.g. ERE - heavy spears, heavy infantry - the result of several chevrons up seems like nothing. In fact the result for 99% of my battles was probably determined by landscape, available forces and force composition, nothing else. Meaning no difference if green units or full gold chevron units would have been used?

There is an improvement in stats, but I think that in Attila its less pronounced that in other TW games. I've also noticed that its possible to recruit units at a high silver rank using bonuses from retinue, generals, building, and especially offices. Extra melee def/attack is also not entirely useless for missile troops. I've seen high rank ones fight off weakened enemies that try to rush them. Light cavalry also needs to get a clean charge against decent skirmisher or they may have the tables turned on them.

Okay. Might be. Irrelevant for 99% of the battles. I never saw anything in hundreds of battles meanwhile that convinced me on the value of troop experience, sorry. The battles I won were won with troops of any experience, the ones I lost likewise, I canīt remember any battel lost that might have been won with all troops on Gold Chevron Level. Thus my simple advice - ignore troop experience.
