With the harvest in and storm clouds brewing to the south the Starks assemble the largest army the North has seen since Torrhen Stark marched south to meet the conqueror. From all across the kingdom thousands of men come answering the call of their lord.

A mass of tents and fluttering banners began to grow and grow outside Winterfell, dwarfing Winter Town. The next largest settlement was would be White Harbor nearly five hundred miles to the south. Nearly sixty thousand men called up from every corner of the north, cannibals from Skagos, men covered in hair from Bear Island, and dreadmen from the Bolton lands.

The lords and chiefs were all ushered into Winterfell's Great Hall, to speak over supper. Lord Bolton with his pale eyes, the Flint with his meaty fists, Chief Magnar covered in tattoos and countless others. The High lords closest to lord Stark while the other sat according to their station along the way outward. Once they were seated and settled in Rickard stood to speak. My Lord and Ladies! He called over the crowd's chatter. I have called you all here as my forefather Torrhen Stark once called upon your forefathers. Storms brew to the south and while the North has always guided itself clear of such petty squabbling, that might not be an option this time.. the maesters say this winter will be long and cold, we will need grain from the south and even then we might not have enough to keep everyone fed. He interlocked his fingers. We have been approached by the so called blacks and the greens both. They have both come with offers titles, honors, food for the winter years to come and the like.. as if they could buy Northern blood so cheaply. I would not wish to see blood shed for either side but my father took an oath to the dragon queen and she has promised to put an end to southern interference in Northern affairs.. so I will not see it undone we will march for the blacks as Rickon would have done. His face grew somber. I call you here to ask for your support in this endeavor and garner your experience in seeing it done. We march south not to place a crown on some woman's head but to see our future prosperity secured, at the point of a sword if need be.

Lady Darla stood triumphant at Rickard's side, every part the She-Wolf. Her brother stood not far from her, the Holt, the Long and the Lake also. She acknowledged them with a smile, though inside she could not help but squirm at the fact the bastard was going to lead her men and not her. She kept up the pretence even as Rickard made his speech, a speech which revealed a rather distasteful and mercenary side to her Laughing Wolf...that their fathers had sworn themselves to the whore of Dragonstone was enough for her. There was the faintest trace of dishonour in his words...grasping ambition unbecoming of a Northman. But he was young, and she carried his child in her womb. A son would give her the influence necessary to better shape him into the great Lord he was destined to be...and so she smiled, nodding in full agreement even as the edges of her furs fluttered in the breeze.

I understand the North has struck up its banners and readies for war. I ask whether your men shall march south in one force, or whether it will be possible for the more southernmost Northern lords to arrive earlier? If the Reeds, and Dustin, and Flints could march south immediately and arrive earlier they would be a great help to us here in the Riverlands.

I give leave for your men and the eastern fleets to sail to Dragonstone Lord Caron. Rickard stated. The Boltons, the Dustins, the Mormonts, the Umbers, the Mountain Clans, the Glovers and the Skagosi will make up the vanguard. My half-brother Brandon will be given command over this force. the Crannogmen will return to the Neck, they have shown great courage coming here but I will feel infinitely more secure knowing the North's doorstep is guarded by the most deadly warrior in the kingdoms. The rest will form up north of Moat Cailin and wait on developments from the south, I leave my younger brother Eddard to protect and govern Winterfell in my abscence. Now eat and make merry we march to war on the morrow's light.
