OK who do you consider to be the greatest and most respected rock icon alive today?

Ill give you my top 3 of the top of my head

    1 Sir Paul Mc Cartney

Id venture the largest selling artist in history combining his Beatle, Wings and solo material. And does anyone doubt his respectablity even with this latest snafu with a divorce?

He does it all. Plays many instruments(was the first person to release an album on which he played all the instruments). Writes his own music and lyrics and has a great voice to back it all up. Besides being one of the best bass players ever.

    2 Eric Clapton

I rmember when it was said that Clapton is god. I love his work with Cream and Blind Faith the best. But his volume of music is huge going back to the mid and early 60s like Pauls.

    3 Billy Joel

Another man with an incredible inventory of songs. A mutlitalent musician who like the others writes and preforms his own music and lyrics.

No love for Derek & The Dominos?

I agree with your list, but where would you place David Bowie?

BB King, I would think. I mean, he's got so many fans all over the place, and he's one of the best guitarists alive. Can blues music count too?

I agree with Eric Clapton though, there's no way he can be slumped off to the side.

No I dont think BB qualifies as a rocker though I do think he is the greatest living Blues Icon. In that category hes ahead of Clapton.

No love for Derek & The Dominos?
Sure but not his best stuff. I like him with John Mayhal and the Yardbirds as well. But the Cream always rises to the top.

Somewhere in the top ten though the last thing he did that I like was Tin Machine.

I agree that Cream was definetely Clapton's best, but i would have to say the Derek and the Dominos was second. I mean, you've got Duane Allman AND Eric Clapton! Come on now!

Blind Faith was alright I guess, but there is only a few songs of theirs that I like.

But his Stuff with the Bluesbreakers was awesome too. I love his guitaring .

Anyway, how about Mick Jagger, Pete Townshend, Jeff Beck, Roger Waters and Jimmy Page?

I'll agree with McCartney and Clapton....

As for Clapton, his best stuff was with Cream (well, the 60's altogether)... but!; I wouldn't say he really has had many bad moments, except for perhaps the 70's.... With Derek & The Domino's, try getting the Live at the Filmore CD, that shows he could pull off some insane stuff, after cream.

His revival in the late 80's- early 90's is proof he was still good, "Journeyman" was his best selling solo album yet. Hehe, just go on youtube, and after watching some video's, you'll know why he is still god.....

Also, someone messed with his Wikipedia article:

Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born March 30, 1945), nicknamed "Slowhand", is god, plain and simple. Anyone who disputes this needs only to be referred to numerous writings by his disciples clearly stating "Clapton is GOD". It is 100% true.

McCartney. His pedigree, talent and service to R&R over 40 years goes without saying. His Knighthood is justly deserved.

I don't really think I need to mention any of the ones that have been brought up before, since many go without saying really. I'll pick one who is fast becoming a respected icon - Chris Cornell, for his work in Soundgarden, Audioslave, and his solo career. His work is generally applauded on the whole, and has of course, become the voice of the new Bond movie soundtrack.

I guess too, I find myself bringing up Billy Corgan, who is frequently applauded by renowned musicians, particuarly Pete Townstead and David Bowie, who come to think of it, I believe both of whom should be considered as part of the respected rock elite. As for Corgan, he is frequently found aiding various bands and artists with album production, and I believe his writing talent is again becoming a point of respect throughout the industry.

    Henry Rollins

    - not only because he would eat every single one of the artists mentioned above (excluding Ian Mackaye of course).

But he would then proceed to humiliate their stage performance before giving a quick spoken word performance in which the survivors would die of laughter.

Anyone left standing after that can bow to his superior intellect

Whats Billy Joel doing on that list? D.Bowie, M.Jagger, Dylan, N.Young, L.Cohen, way more influential than Joel. Clapton and Mc Cartney seems fine.

OMG! I left off Jello Biafra! I guess that's only because I tend to relate him to politics more than music these days, but still, how egregious!
