hey guys. i got the solutions from reddit. i just want to mention that this worked for me. and moreover, with AA still on.
"go to steam launch options and type in -ne to the command line, that worked for me. (-ne runs in in borderless mode. once you set up your screen resolution in the menu, re launch the game with the -ne still running, and it will be good to go!"

Yes, setting the -ne option in the launch command works and you can have AA on. Just make sure you have your resolution the same in the pref file as the desktop. Thx, Reza![]()

"C:\******\Total War Rome\RomeTW.exe" -ne in a shortcut for non steam version. That was all I had to do.
You're awesome!
Guys please keep reporting Rome 1 issues in the Windows Feedback app! There are many other games reported not working correctly or not at all in Windows 10 at the moment. Seems like the 10 million insider users were no hardcore gamers, or those were to lazy to report problems in the insider preview
Please search for Rome Total War there and click me too if the description fits your error.
@MasterofNone, any idea why anti aliasing is causing issues?

hi again I can confirm now that Rome 1 won't work when antialiasing is enabled. It was disabled in my preferences.txt that I hosted according to the Steam guide I made with HazardHawk. As soon I enable it in-game, it won't start anymore, regardless the resolutions are set correctly.

I've no idea. I'm not a techie, just a modder who has to work out all these problems software brings
As the AA is not an issue when using the -ne option, and as the problem with the AA seems to flash between resolutions, I'm guessing the two are connected...but someone with greater tech know-how will have to say what that connection is...

The version of AA that Rome Total War uses is directly tied in to DirectX9. From what I can tell at the moment Windows 10 cannot automatically adjust itself to use the AA in higher versions of directx. If you think about it, it makes sense. Since windows 10 is built on a much much higher version of directx games like Rome Total War cannot understand the directx base code. So we have to turn off AA in the preference file so that it does not check and can load up.
I have to look at the source code of RTW but it is closed sourced. I guarantee you if Creative Assembly released the source code for RTW then the modders will be able to go around it completely and make it work on Windows 10.

Hello all,
I downloaded my Windows 10 upgrade last night, and RTW Gold won't launch. I have it on disc. So I guess that is the "non Steam" version? I just received a feedback survey from Bill Gates & Co. I told those geniuses just what I think of this Windows 10 experience so far. IT SUCKS! The stuff all of you are talking about is completely over my head. I almost thought that I just had to rename the RTW shortcut with -ne. But it probably entails re-writing files right? I'm not very comfortable with that - because I don't know enough about it.
Well, I said "To Hell with Windows 10 and went back to 8.1. I deleted the "Get Windows Icon," and uninstalled the Windows 10 update (KB3035583). I love Rome 2, but really have a hard time with the "economic" aspect of it. And I still love Rome 1. I let Bill Gates & Co .have some more of my wrath in my "exit survey."
So far I checked out different options for getting RTW1:Gold to work (Steam version) and this is what works for me:
1. Set the preferences.txt to my desktop configuration.
Ok so that post wasn't finished yet.
1. Set the preferences.txt to my desktop configuration in the Rome Total War Gold/preferences folder.
2. Set the preferences.txt to my desktop configuration in the Rome Total War Gold/bi/preferences folder.
3. In Steam library, right-click on Rome: Total war and go to properties. The hit the "Launch options" button and simply write down: "-ne" (without the "")
4. RTW and RTW:BI both work fine for me on win10 now.
