Thread: Westerlands Muster

  1. #1

    Default Westerlands Muster

Lord Jason Lannister surveyed the vast host assembled on his order from a balcony on Casterly Rock itself. Well over fifty thousand men with thousands more set to arrive. It was a sight worthy of awe and pride in equal measure. Jason knew that all the pretty banners were misleading, battles were dirty and bloody things and this war would swallow armies whole. His thoughts went to the thousands of mercenaries hired to bolster his forces, again yet to arrive but he dared not delay much longer to wait for them, to hesitate was to risk everything still the thousands of fresh troops and particularly the heavy ones could well make the difference. He would have to hope they would arrive in time to reinforce him before the first battles of the war were truly fought.

200 light infantry arrive from Crakehall. Their commander is a minor cousin, however, Crakehall has arrived to speak to his liege himself.

Jason received his Lords in a small chamber home to a table and comfortable furnishings of various kinds. Wine was available but the lion's share of the table surface was covered in various maps and tokens.

"Welcome my good Lords, tis a good thing to see all of you once again."

    Crakehall spoke quickly.

"I apologise for bringing only 200 men, but i dare not leave the road through Crakehall, Lannisport and the Rock undefended when the Reach stands undeclared. I would like to ask for reinforcements, we have recieved news that Rowan of Goldengrove has gone Black, and Footly of Tumbleton has also raised a host, along with Tarly . The road cannot be held with 5000 men, and it needs to hold."

    Lord Jason nodded his understanding.

"I shall grant you two thousand men to return with you to defend Crakehall, not a vast host but it should prove enough to give most foes pause when taken with the necessity of besieging your seat. I plan to have a force of men ready to march to your aid as is required."

    Crakehall nodded.

"It isn't just my seat, Crakehall guards the entire entrance to the Westerlands. However, I should be able to hold the Sea Road with 7'000 men."

After Lord Crakehall had said his piece, Damion stepped up to speak. "My lord, if you would allow me, I could lead an army consisting of the men of the Western Watch, the Burning Dale, and the Fire and Isle. The army would travel along our northern cost and attack either Seagard or Fairmarket. Seagard holds the vast majority of the Riverlands navy while Fairmarket is the most central trading hub in the Riverlands. If we take Fairmarket, it will be easier to go on and take Riverrun, but that leaves us open to attack from the Mallisters" After he finishes speaking, Damion wipes his red hair away from his face, he knew no matter what would happen, this would be a great and terrible war.

    Lord Jason nodded.

"You're strategy has merit Lord Damion, however mine own thoughts were of a march on Pinkmaiden followed by those lands on the approaches to Riverrun itself. Drawing out its defenders even whilst we clear the way to it. I would have your say on such a move given we doubtless lack the men to carry it off and still move on a stronghold such as Seagard."

Tion had listened for a long time, and decided to add his own input.

My lords, are we leaving a force to protect the Westerlands in case of an Ironborn invasion?

    Default Westerlands Muster

Nodding to Lord Jason Damion replies "Wayfarer's Rest is also on the direct route to Riverrun. If the Vance's are not on our side I would like to lead the force besieging them."

Turning to Tion, Damion says "I have men training at Castamere as we speak and more to come. As we are not moving through the north, the West Watch fleet will be free to defend the coasts with the rest of the Westerland fleet. If the Ironborn attack and the Drumm's are among them, save them for my family, we have unsettled business." As he said this last part, Damion's very appearance appeared to darken, his eyes, usually holding a light color, were now appeared to be a storming inferno. Anyone seeing him now would no he wanted the Drumm's decimated.

"I also have men training or making their way to us and our fleets can more than defend our shores." Jason assured Tion before turning back to Damion. "As for the command you may have it. I have sent Lord Marbrand ahead to the capital and mean to form a second army to join him consisting of the men of Kayce and mercenaries. Then the pair of us will use those forces not under the command of Lord Crakehall to take the war to the Riverlands. I shall march on Pinkmaiden and you Fairmarket, if you have doubts speak them now."

"I fear not. The heavy horse will be vital in carrying the war to the enemy. You will receive them in time if the situation demands it but for now you need only hold a stronghold and for that foot will be more than adequate."

I had intended to hold the Sea Road, rather than Crakehall Castle. If you are to invade the Riverlands, heavy horse will be useless due to the fords. Archers and foot will carry the fight in the North East."

"In just weeks I will have hundreds of heavy horse and we will know if the enemy will march along the searoad or no. We will also have many thousands of troops to send to reinforce you. If however we are to hope to succeed in the Riverlands and Crownlands we will need a great many heavy horse to sweep aside the enemy. The Riverlands are flat outside their namesake and if the enemy abandons the open field against us so much better."

"They will hold you on the rivers. They won't allow you the chance to crush them on the open field. Your battles will be fought in water, against Riverlands Longbows and pikes."
