    Riverrun

    Riverrun
Current lord: Lord Harren Tully, Lord Paramount of the Trident, Lord of Riverrun
Recources: Grains - Increases levy infantry size by 10%

    • River Defenses: Riverrun has excellent natural defenses, as it is situated at the meeting point of two roaring rivers, the Tumblestone and the Red Fork. It even has a third man-made ditch covering the land around the walls between the two rivers, that can easily be filled with water from a sluice gate in times of siege. This effectively turns Riverrun into an island, making any attacks all but impossible. +3 to siege defense rolls.
    • Well Watered Lands: Fed by the many rivers coursing through it, the Riverlands are one of the most fertile regions of Westeros, matching the Reach in its bounty. Riverrun's vast stocks are usually stuffed to bursting by the bounty reaped by the Riverlords, providing an ample reserve to last the winter with. -1 death rolls.

A raven arrives from the Vale House Belmore of Strongsong. Within the document is a request of trade, the ample grain supplies of the lands of Riverrun for the produce of the Belmore quarries.

Arriving with a riverboat, the flag of house Strong was raised to notify the lords of Riverrun that Lord Lyonel Strong had arrived and wished to speak with his Lord Paramount.

    (applies to all three visitors)

The visitor was lead immidiately into the solar, once his comeing was announced, as black banners waved above Riverrun.
He was told that the previous Lord, Edric Tully has passed away and few days after the name feast of King Viserys, his son and heir Lord Daryn Tully, died within an inn by the inner bleedings, caused by an arrow shot into his right shoulder during an outlaw ambush hours before.
Now, Lord Harren Tully was sitting upon the wooden throne of Riverrun - a boy of merely seven years, while he was surrounded by his Lady mother and the steward of the keep, a man from a knightly side branch of House Vance.

As well as previous visitors the Lords were lead inside the keep, where Lord Harren Tully, the Lady Dowager Shae Tully and Lord Regent Vance would await them, the household guard standing ceremonial within the large hall to held up the impression of House Tully being probably hit hard by the current crisis, but still was able to keep up order.
Nervously the young boy watched the visitors, as he felt uncomfortable upon his wooden throne - rather he would have liked to play with his siblings than doing this whole thing, on which mainly his mother and Ser Mance would have to say the final word.

Lord Tully. Raymun spoke with an inclination of his head. Me and these good men. He gestured to the posy of noblemen surrounding him. Have come to reswear fealty and pay respects to the late Lord Tully, as requested my lord.. and lady. Old Lord Darry's quire eyes rested upon the young boy as he sat upon his throne, an authoritative look. The man had an intimidating demeanor for adults, let alone children thrust into such a position in such uncertain times.

"Rhaenyra is the rightful heir to the throne. The usurper claims legitimacy by merit of physically sitting the Iron Throne, but we will see how long he can stand its discomfort." She stated the last sentence with complete assuredness. "Still, while it would be a great honor to strike an alliance with House Tully and the Riverlands on behalf of my niece the Queen, I am not here to solicit you for support. I am the mother of many Corbray children, but I have not forgotten my House words. As high as honor. It is for each family to decide as honor dictates which to support." She took a calming breath and proceeded coolly. "Still, we are at somewhat of an impasse as a result of geography. It is impossible for any Vale army to march where it needs to go without crossing the Riverlands. Specifically, Darry Castle and the Red Fork."

She remained objective. "Unless the Riverlands declare for the usurper, we are not enemies. But we would not raise tensions by crossing lands without giving notice. I will give this word of caution: if you do declare for the usurper, our armies will find another way to join the war. It will take all the dragons the usurper can conjure to lay low the Eyrie and its defenses. In the meantime every assault will break like waves upon rock in an assault on the Bloody Gate."
"Mylady misunderstood our intentions", Lady Shae intervened fearful, trying to clarify the situation, "Riverrun might not join this war, as I do not want to lose my son and his siblings.
Harren is a boy of 7 years and Lord for a few weeks. Does our family look like we are willing to sacrifice more Tullys to get punished, if we choose the wrong side?
You might be confident of the strength of the Eyrie and I do belief your words, Lady Augusta - yet Riverrun provides no protection against any kind of dragon. We have not forgotten Harrenhall - our vassals shall do what they think is the best course of actions and we will grant any of their families refugee behind our walls. But I can not forgive myself, if my sweet son has to pay the price in front of any Targaryen King for chooseing the wrong side. I can not imagine Rhaenyra nor Aegon Targaryen leaveing Riverrun unharmed, if we support their enemy."

Lady Vypren feared that Augusta would in the name of Rhaenyra most likely intend to force Riverrun upon the Black's side, if she had to - and only the Seven knew what would happen to Harren, should the bold words of the Arryns result in Rhaenyra's failure. All she could hope for was that her brother-in-law would soon return from his Essosi exile and solve the situation in a better way.

In these troubled times our lands must be at its strongest. That is why my brother has send me ahead to talk to your lordship about trade between our houses. Dark times lie ahead. The Riverlands should be prepared for that. Maidenpool has a coastal harbour, it would bring in the riches from the sea, which Riverrun as a landlocked nation has no access to."
Lady Shae nodded, while the boy looked unsure towards the man before nodding also, since his mother seemed to be comfortable with it.
"We accept the offer, good Ser, and will know to estimate the value of House Mooton during those troubled times", she replied benefitting, "We also thank you for your kind words and sent our regards to Lord Walys."

The man had an intimidating demeanor for adults, let alone children thrust into such a position in such uncertain times.
In the party of Darry was his chief bannerman, Lord Walys Mooton. He wanted to know what was expected of him. Should they declare for Black or Green? He had mixed feelings about all of this. He watched the green boy on the throne and swallowed. He once found himself in a similar situation. Although, this boy was lucky enough to still have his mother. He was unlucky enough to get the burden of ruling on his tiny shoulders directly. He watched Lady Shae. She was still very young herself. Hardly older then his younger siblings. So this was it. The Riverland were ruled by a green boy and a young woman who was half a maid herself. Not the most reassuring thought. "Lord Harren, Lady Shae." Manfryd said and stepped a pace forward. "When I was a boy, not much older then you, my lord. I found myself in a similar position as you. I was lucky to have friends in Riverrun, as your grandfather lord Edric took me in as his ward and page. To prepare me for my future. Might his lordship or you, my lady, be in need of a friend or teacher, you only have to look to Maidenpool to find one. We would gladly return the favour."
The boy had to gulp upon Lord Darry's words, as he felt uncomfortable with so many important men, with whom normaly his father had talked, looked upon him.
He listened to Manfryd's words as well, even though they made him feel uncomfortable as well.
"I... I don't need a teacher... do I?", Harren tried to resist, as he knew from his father that a Tully does not easily give in, but as well he ended the sentence unsure, since he knew that his words had to be allowed by his mother and Ser Mance, "I'm not a maiden or what does the Lord mean?"
"If you are not a maiden, then don't behave like one", Lady Shae chuckled, while she fondled the confused boy, "Indeed, mylord Mooton we would appreciate your kind offer, as Riverrun would need all help we can afford during this war. Yet, however, I struggle when it comes to offering my eldest son and probably his siblings as wards, if the attention of the Targaryens would be focused on Riverrun and war might come sooner than we think."
    She mustered the man curious.
"What can Maidenpool offer me to protect my son, what Riverrun can't, even if enemies of our House would know his location?", she asked curious, "I do not question your loyality, Ser and neither the wisdom and kindness behind this offer - but I do not want to die as a widow of an extincted House, who allowed its downfall. Even Harrenhall was a mighty castle - yet the Targaryens burnt the whole Hoare family for their disobedience within those walls."

"No, not taking the boy from his home. Riverrun is further away from both Dragonstone and Kings Landing. But if the situation would ask for it, and he should stay hidden for awhile, we are ready for it. But one of my house could transfer here to Riverrun. Or when this horrid conflict is over, he can come to as a squire." Manfryd said, offering a smile behind his brown beard.

The Lady Dowager made her way into the solar and addressed Lady Shae "My condolences for your recent losses. I shall pray to the Mother for the safety and health of your child." She said shortly. She turned to Ser Vance "Ser Vance, these deaths have come at an inopportune time. The realm will shortly be thrown into a war and the Riverlands will likely become the highway of armies marching to war. I am here on behalf of Lord Lucian Arryn in order to get a sense of Riverrun's loyalties." She did not bother to reveal anything of the Vale's loyalties. Let him work that out for himself.

My dear lady of Riverrun, my sincerest condolences on your loss. I pray the Seven console your poor grieving heart at this difficult time and watch over your son as he blossoms into a great ruler and leader of men. Count on me for whatever you need in this dark hour.

"War?", the boy said frightened, before looking unsure and frightened towards his mother, "Mother, I don't want a war!"
The Lady Dowager nodded polite towards Lady Arryn, appreciateing her condolences.
"My thanks, mylady", she said, putting her hand on her son's shoulder, "As upon politics I fear it will be complicated..."
Unsure she looked towards Ser Vance, who seemed to be a competent veteran, when it came to a knight's buiseness, judgeing by his age. The man of around 39 namedays shook his head in disagreement.
"As I try to say, mylady, we are at the moment uncertain what to do, as Lady Shae and the young Lord wish to remain neutral upon the Targaryen's medleing their buiseness, no matter our political alliances", he tried to say respectful, "Lord Edric was a fine man and so was his son - they probably would have supported the rightful King. Yet they are not here to speak and even I as a man, who knew them quite well, can only assume their intentions.
If my lord would wish me to raise Riverrun's banners and to unite the banners of the Riverlords under my command, I would do so and rather suggest this - yet, my authority is thin and even though I am Lord Regent, i can respect the fears of the family I serve. The last overlords of the Riverlands were burned within the walls of Harrenhall and their line extincted till the last son.
I can understand that a war, which is most likely bringing Dragons with it, Mylady and her son prefer to keep up the defenses of Riverrun than leaveing the castle to any possible Dragon attack unguarded."

Augusta was still not convinced. It would appear Riverrun would not oppose them, though, and that was good enough. House Tully had been laid low and made to be indecisive. Still, their vassals might prove troublesome. "If House Tully takes a sacred oath to stay neutral, the Vale will honor it. Betray us, and our wrath will be severe."

"I would be ready to take this oath", Lady Shae replied glad upon Arryn's words, but it was Ser Mance, who was now sceptical.
"King Aegon II might see this step as treason, mylady", the steward replied worried, "Rhaenyra might be the rightful queen by law - yet his grace is in possession of the greatest dragons, Vhagar and Dreamfyre. It is of few use for his lordship to feel the wrath of the Dragons - King's Landing is closer to us than Dragonstone. And as well I fear our vasalls will lose our respect, if we do not take a side."
Ser Vance looked excuseing towards the Arryn Lady.
"Lady Shae has appointed me the Lord Regent of the Trident and being steward of this keep for a long time, I know that the Lords and Ladies of the Riverlands always remained united under a strong Tully Lord", he explained carefully, "Harren is a mere boy - we have to show at least that he is not just in name Lord Paramount of the Trident. It is nothing personal against you or Queen Rhaenyra, Lady Arryn - but our position is too close to the capital and too valuable for Aegon to hold there as well. Not to mention that we would be surrounded by allies of King Aegon like House Baratheon and probably the Westerlands. I would pray to the Seven if we could leave the Riverlands out of this conflict - but Lord Tully's family has more to lose, if they decide to oppose Aegon's demands."
"And what if Lady Arryn remains right?", Shae wanted to know, looking slightly furious, "Ser Vance, my respect towards my son's Lord Regent goes as far as he gets not eaten by any dragon or killed by any invaders. House Tully is able to stay out of a war - the vassal lords will have to respect the decision."
"Until they stand in front of our doorsteps after the end of the war and demand Lord Harren's head for merely watching how his people burnt?", Vance replied, "Young lady, your son will die either way without being able to hold his reputation among the Riverlords, no matter the Targaryens and all of their dragons. I propose merely logical options."

Then two shrieks break the tranquility, two leathern wings darkened the sky. One of the dragons was all covered in red scales, red as blood, a vicious and large beast. The other was smaller but nimble. They landed on a hill near Riverrun. In the hill Daemon raised their small camps, two tents around a bonfire. Daemon Targaryen, the Rogue Prince, and his stepson had arrived to Riverrun...

When the shout "Dragon!" came from various soldiers, the face of Lord Tully became pale as anyone could imagine. The boy was probably near wetting his pants, as his mother hugged him protective to calm him down. Yet her look seemed to be worried as well. The only person remaining slightly calm was none other than the Lord Regent of the Trident himself.
"Men, to the walls!", was the stern command of Ser Mance, as he drew his sword, "Archers to the walls, while everyone shall be prepared to attack, shall they invade."
He gave Lady Arryn a short nod, once a man described him the dragon.
"As a guest and visitor of the House, I will put your life under my protection, if needed, no matter the allegiances", he replied calm, "If mylady wishes to leave the keep on her own, she is free to do so, as I do not know how your relations with Lord Daemon Targaryen are."
He then looked towards Lady Shae.
"You know where to hide the children", the steward stated stern, "If any Targaryen, no matter his colour and size of his dragon thinks that I would fear their filthy pets that much that I would surrender the castle, I was trusted to defend, he shall think twice. I will speak on Lord Harren's behalf - and shoot back, if they dare to attack first.
And Mylady, tell the Maester to prepare the ravens - should they melt down Riverrun till the last stone, I will ensure that anyone shall hear words upon this act of war."

The Lady of Riverrun did as she was told, while Ser Vance left the solar to gather the men of Riverrun as quickly as possible.

Atop the walls, the steward inspected the sitation, checking for the dragon riders to confront them at the gates. Assumingly they would have attacked already, if they had hostile intentions - yet it could not be known for sure, what they would do, if the steward refuses to do as they want.
