HOUSE UMBER OF THE LAST HEARTH
"No Chain Will Bind"
As of the year of Aegon's Conquest 129
The Umbers are a hardy race, tempered by the rough northern climate. They control the harsh land along the Bay of Seals, south of the New Gift and extending west ot the kingsroad - a place of wild hills and ancient forests of oak and pine. Their lands include the northern Last River and the Lonely Hills. The kingsroad runs along the western marches of Umber territory for a hundred leagues. Most of their lands is east of the kingsroad, but the Umbers graze their sheep in the high meadows of the northern mountains in summer. An ancient house who once ruled as Kings, they claim descent from the King of Giants, Um-Bom-Bur-Ber, known as Bombur the Unbent, who refused to ally with the Others during the first Long Night, instead pledging his strength to Bran the Builder and the realms of men. Once the war was done, Bombur Umber and his kin settled what became known as the Umberlands and became the staunchest friends and supporters of House Stark (though it would take many centuries for them to bend the knee and become Stark bannermen).
The patriarch of the family until recent years was Lord Lars Umber, the Little Giant, a man uncharacteristically short for an Umber. He wed Aregelle Stark of Winterfell, a match which brought him and his house much honour in that time and this. The She-Wolf of the Hearth would rule the Umberlands wisely while her husband fought everywhere from the Wall to the Stormlands to the Disputed Lands, earning fame and coin for himself.
Their son, Lord Hodor Umber (70-124) dubbed the Giant Wolf, had little patience for his father's foreign preoccupations and strange ways. He preferred to venture instead to the mountains, to Skagos, and across the sea to Ibben. In his adolescence he went against his father's wishes and wed Jorelle Mormont, daughter of a proud but poor house. The union would be a tempestuous one, and many would blame her temper when he sought solace in the arms of a Skagosi shieldmaiden. Hodor was hastily attempting to rid himself of Jorelle when the Skagosi perished birthing his bastard. Jorelle did not long outlive her, and he wed Dana of clan Wull, daughter of the Wull, a girl from the mountains in whom he saw some semblance of the beloved Skagosi. He soon tired of her, and many would blame her when she was caught outside in a snow storm, going into labour and dying after being pulled out from a frozen lake she had fallen into. His third and final wife would be Erena Glover, originally sought by him as a wife for the bastard he intended to make his heir. Erena was said to have wept when she heard she would marry Lord Hodor instead, but she did her duty, giving him several children and assuming rule of the Last Hearth when he died, preventing the bastard from usurping the seat.
