The City of Oldtown and the Hightower, the Seat of House Hightower

    Description of Oldtown with Map

The city of Oldtown is the second largest city in Westeros, second only in size and in wealth to Westeros’ capital city of King’s Landing. However, unlike King’s Landing, Oldtown is not affected by the squalor and filth of the capital city and Oldtown does not have vast areas devoted to the poor like the Flea Bottom. The city is filled with a myriad of winding alleys and passages ways of the many different buildings, homes, and apartments of its inhabitants. The city is ruled by House Hightower, the most influential and powerful family amongst all of the Reach’s lords.

The city sits upon the mouth of the Honeywine River and is actually split into two sections by the river, with the large Aegon’s Crossing Bridge connecting the halves together, with a smaller bridge to the North. The Honeywine River gives the city of Oldtown an inexhaustible source of fresh water, allowing Oldtown and its surrounding countryside to prosper. The city’s location at the mouth of the Honeywine River gives Oldtown a magnificent harbor that is one of the busiest, if not the busiest harbors in all of Westeros. The harbor is quite large with many wharves on both sides of the Honeywine. The harbor is protected by a great chain that can be raised and lowered to allow access into the harbor. Any ships that try to pass through the chain would be shattered and their hulls broken. It serves as a viable defense mechanism for the city.

Between the two harbors is a very large island. Dubbed Battle Island, and on it is the largest building in all of Westeros at 800 feet tall, the Hightower, the ancient lighthouse and fortified keep of the ruling House. Situated on its own island, the Hightower is quite secure and there is only one way on or off the island through the great bridge connecting to it, though there is a small dockyard where many Hightower warships rest.

To the North of Aegon’s Crossing Bridge, there are a series of islands that together make up the Citadel, which is home to the Maesters, the keepers of knowledge and learning in Westeros. There are bridges which give access to the Citadel and they are protected and fortified. Petirioners who wish to see the maesters can only enter through the main bridge on the Eastern side.

Oldtown was once the home to the Faith of the Seven and as such, the city is filled with dozens of shrines, septs, and other religious structures.(See Map) the most important Sept, the Starry Sept, was the former home of the Seven Faiths. The city of Oldtown even houses a small shrine to the Essosi Red God R’hllor near the city’s Merchant Square, which serves the religious needs of the many sailors from Essos.

Oldtown is protected by strong walls and stout towers and the city has large force of City Watchmen to aid in its defense. Throughout the city, the barracks of the City Watch highlight the security of the city. In the Northern section of Western half of Oldtown lays the Hightower Military Complex which houses the military forces of House Hightower.

    Hightower Biography

House Hightower is one of the most ancient noble families in all of Westeros, descending from the First Men who ruled the area that would become the city of Oldtown as petty Kings during the Dawn of Days. When the Andals invaded Westeros, the Hightowers shrewdly allied with the newcomers, allowing them to keep their influence, strength and power in what would become the Kingdom of the Reach. As the years passed, the Hightower’s influence and power grew and they slowly became one of the most powerful Houses in all of Westeros. When the Targaryens invaded and the Kingdom of the Reach was destroyed beneath the dragon’s flame, the Hightowers were nowhere to be seen, having refused to join the battle agains the Targaryens. They wisely held their forces out of the war, behind the mighty walls of Oldtown and under the guidance of the voice of the Seven, the High Septon himself, the Hightowers opened the gates of their city to Aegon the Conqueror and spared their city from a gruesome fate, allowing to Oldtown to continue to grow and thrive.

The members of House Hightower rule over the second largest city in all of Westeros and one of its largest and wealthiest of ports, the city of Oldtown. The Hightowers are one of the wealthiest families in all of Westeros, second only to the Lord Paramount of the land of gold, the Lannisters. Members of this House are known for their loyalty and stalwartness as well as their caution and temperance. The Hightowers are devout worshippers of Faith of the Seven and have built many Great Septs in their city to show their dedication to the Seven Faiths. The Hightowers are the patrons of the great Citadel, home of wise and learned Maesters.

After 100 years or so after Aegon's Landing, the Hightowers have become political powerhouses in the capital of King's Landing having claimed both the position of Hand of the King but also the position of Queen of Westeros as well, leading House Hightower into a potential conflict with the current heir tot he throne, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. Trouble is brewing in Westeros as the aged King Viserys' time is almost at an end and a fight for the crown of Westeros nearing with House Hightower at the center of it all.

Lady Elinor Stokeworth, sister to Lord Harry Stokeworth arrives in a ship from King's Landing. After exploring the city for a few hours she arrives, with two sworn swords, to the gates of the Hightower. She humbly requests an audience with the Voice of Oldtown, Lord Hightower. She had carefully dressed herself for the ocasion, wearing a woollen gown, green as summer leaves, lined with soft ermine and graced by a delicate filigree of golden thread. She wore her hair in braids, dark as coal. Her bright, blue eyes look at everything with excitement; Oldtown was even beyond her imagination.

Lady Elinor is granted an audience with Lord Tristian and she is brought before him on Hightower's third level on a balcony overlooking main bridge from Battle Island leading towards the Starry Sept. There he is relaxing and enjoying a beautiful mild summer day. "Lady Elinor of Stokeworth is it? Welcome to my beloved Oldtown and the Hightower. Please sit and what I can do for you today?"

Lady Elinor bows humbly before Hightower.

"Oldtown's wonders are beyond my grasp, my Lord Hightower. I thank you for your hospitality and warm welcome, Lord Tristan"

She sits. Her gaze is filled with amazement as she looks the wondrous sights.

"I came to the Queen of Cities looking for trade, Lord Hightower. We are loyal vassals of His Grace and his son and heir, Prince Aegon, your kinsman. And starting a trade lane between us would be greatly benefitial for the standing of my family in the Crownlands"

OOC: Sorry, I only had my character list ready yesterday. His mentor would be Ser Tristifer Hightower, marshal of Oldtown.

Daeron finds Ser Tristifer Hightower, Lord Hightower's twin brother, outside in the courtyard of one of the outer fortifications of the Hightower drilling some of Oldtown's City Watchmen.

"A pleasure for me to hear those words, Lord Hightower. You are too kind"

She blushed. It seems it was something usual for the young Stokeworths.

"I'd... I'd like to visit Oldtown's wonders, Lord Hightower. I have but glanced its beauties, and I'm sure there's more waiting under the surface"

She smiled again. Somewhat excited and nervous.

"Oh my lady, you have not even seen everything that the surface has to offer, let alone what lies beneath it." said Lord Hightower "Oldtown from down here is nothing compared to Oldtown from the pinnacle of the Hightower, four stories or over 150 ft above."

"150 feet? Mother and Maid! It's an incredible height! And its made by man, it isn't odd that was listed as one of the wonders in the known world. It's breathtaking even from the outside, and I cannot imagine how impressive will be watching the world unfolding before your eyes at its top"

Lady Stokeworth was clearly amazed. Everything had impressed her: the city, the Hightower, the people, the walls, the harbor and Hightower himself. She could barely remember how old and noble was his family.

"Ser," Daeron begins hesitantly "How long do you think we have?"

Back to a moment in time when the news of the death of Viserys I Targaryen was announced across the realm. The men of House Hightower and their advisers sat around a large table as a letter from the capital was being read aloud to them. Besides these men of power stood watch a few dozen of Oldtown's finest City Watchmen, have been brought here as encouragement by their commander.

    Nephew,

As you may know, King Viserys I Targaryen has been taken by the Stranger and your cousin has persuaded his grace Prince Aegon to take the throne of Westeros. I now call upon you to raise your banners as both the Hand of the King and the patriarch of House Hightower to defend your nephew's claim.

    Signed,

Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King.
"There you have it Lord Tristian. My father, the Hand of the King bids you to raise your levies. What is your decision or shall I have to make it for you?" asked Ser Steffon Hightower in a menacing tone. "Or rather, do my Watchmen have to persuade you."

"Why would you need to Steffon. I am honor bound to answer our Hands call." said Lord Tristian Hightower stoically. "Or do you doubt that I will disobey your father's command?"

"You might want to watch your tongue their Tristian. You may be the current Lord but remember who really controls Oldtown, my loyal Watchmen." said Steffon "I bet your wish that your foolish father choose someone else to command the City Watch instead of me. Your gutless father, who only by merit of age succeeded to the Lordship in my father's stead. Sign the orders if you will."

"There, you have your wish Steffon." replied Lord Tristian before handing him the musters orders before Steffon and his men quickly left, satisfied with this act of compliance.

After waiting a few minutes to ensure that the Commander's men were here no more, Ser Baelor Hightower said "Father, are you really going to support this order. It should be your decision to march to war, not Steffon's or uncle Otto's. I cannot believe that deceitful snake has control over us all. Damn him and his Watch."

"We are bound by blood to fight with our kin Baelor. But do not worry son." Lord Tristian replied nonchalantly. "Steffon only has control while Otto remains the hand. Once he is gone, Steffon has no power and as long as I control our House's wealth, his loyal watchmen will not be so loyal at all. For now, let us bide our time and see what happens. I am off to Myr to seal an agreement with them. Their crossbowmen will be needed when the time comes. While I am away, I will trust that you will lead the city while Tristifer and Steffon lead our armies to war. And that is why, Vigilance shall be yours."

A couple of guards enter Lord Hightower's solar, informing him that a spy was caught trying to infiltrate the Hightower. He is currently locked away in the dungeon, waiting for further interrogation.

Bloid at Storms End, but Baratheon had declared for his brother. "who died?" He asks quietly.

"Joffrey Velayron. Rhaenyra's third son." said Tristifer sullenly. "He and Tyraxes fought Vhagar and Aemond. They had no chance."

The looming figure of a dragon could be seen gliding into Oldtown. The looming shadow covered a large portion of the city, but fortunately Vhagar was not here to visit fire and blood. Circling the Hightower a few times, the dragon eventually landed. Aemond dismounted and raised his hands to show he was no enemy, before requesting to see Lord Hightower along with his brother.

Ser Tristifer Hightower came out to meet the Prince "Prince Aemond, my apologies, but Lord Hightower is still in Essos treating with the Myrish. I am am acting Lord in his stead. Why have you come, surely your brother needs you and your dragon near the capital, not here in the deepest regions of the Reach."

In addition to Ser Tristifer, Prince Daeron was also present alnog with Ser Steffon Hightower, the son of the Hand of the Knig, and the young Baelor Hightower, heir to Oldtown.

Aemond merely shrugged at Hightower's comment, patting Vhagar on the nose before walking forward to speak with him. The Dragon lay down, content, but watchful

I question the wisdom of it myself, kinsman. He said, with a slight smile. But the King sent me here, and this here I went. I am here to organise a marriage to a Reachlord for Daeron, although my brother wants me to take him back to the Capitol. He paused for a moment, digesting his own words, before his brows furrowed slightly. I see little sense in going back and forth between the Reach and Kings Landing, so I shall instead take counsel with you here.

Daeron looks at his elder brother confused.
"Aegon wants me back at the capital?" He asks confused. "But would I not be more useful here? Tesserion will be needed to help clear the Reach of rebels."
