Jason Lannister arrives in Winterfel some two moons after his raven with a suitable retinue of twenty armed retainers, a dozen servants and four grooms laden down with chests of personal belongings and gifts. The man himself is dressed in finery and colours of his house but his tall and well made frame, handsome face, long golden hair and beard would all mark him as a Lion even if there were not one on his breast.

A light summer's snow fell across the endlessly rolling Northern hills as Lord Lannister approched Winterfell. Scouting riders approch him as the citadel comes into view. The mounted Northmen were hardened and grizzled folk, flying a banner blazoned with the grey direwolf of House Stark. My Lord, our Lord Stark is off handling business to the west. The leader grumbled. Your procession may continue on to Winterfell, if you would follow us we will take you to him.

    ------

It wasn't but a short ride before something new came into Lord Jason's view. A small crowd of banners surrounded an ancient executioners stone, other oddly cut stones of ancient make surrounded it in a wide and broken circle. A man in the black of the Night's Watch lied on top of it and a figure with a large blade loomed over him. Rickard placed the tip of Ice gently upon the ground, his voice larger than life and carried across the hills. Here in the sight of gods and men I, Rickard of the House Stark Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North, sentence you to die. The blade was a blur as it came down upon the man, cutting through the man's neck like a knife through butter. Rickard handed the blade to his second for cleaning as he saw the Lannister approaching. So you decided to come after all, I warned you it'd be quite the journey. He remarked while cleaning his hand with a rag.

"You did not lie but I have a liking of journeys Lord Rickard and so far the North has not been disappointing. I know no land quite like it...although it seems some men need shortening here just as anywhere else." Jason said nodding towards the corpse. "Deserter?"

He smiled, snow gently falling upon his fur cloak. A stark never lies. He looked out over the hills nodding. Some from the south might call it bleak, but we Northmen understand it like few others could. His smile faded at mention of the former brother of the Watch. Aye, he abandoned the Watch and broke his oath. Swore up and down that a Giant crushed four of his brothers on a ranging trip.. men see what they wish to. He shook his head lightly. Come let us return to Winterfell, I'm sure you could use some food after such a long trip.

"A shame and one that cost him. Still you have the right of it I am starving and you are generous so let us leave dead oathbreakers to be forgotten as they should when good folk have sweeter things to think of."

Rickard nodded, turning to one of his sworn men. Return the body to his family. They'll have some peace knowing what became of him. The stoic look upon his face melted away, replaced with the Laughing Wolf's usual smiling visage. Well come on, I won't have it said the Starks are inhospitable to guests. The young lord stated, mounting his horse. The ride wasn't long and Rickard passed the time singing a few tones, including the Dornishmen's Wife. Soon the impregnable keep of the Winter Kings could be seen on the horizon, growing larger and larger as they made their approach.

"For all men must die and I've tasted the Dornish man's wife haha!" Jason finished with a laugh before looking suitably impressed at the ancient fortress. "Now of course you know I would point out what powerful and wonderful sight your seat is my lord but then I would be obliged to make up some nonsense about the Rock being twice as vast or thrice as beautiful and my mother and wetnurse both told me at the tit not to lie."

Rickard laughed, a joyous thing - the kind of laugh that warmed the bones. My mother told me much the same thing. Winterfell has been the heart of the North for millennia, it's funny how living in a place for too long dulls one's understanding of just how unique it is. As they passed through first wall and crossed Winterfell's frigid moat. Tell me, have you ever heard the legend of how Winterfell was built, Lannister?

    "Never." Jason informed him.

Rickard smiled, he loved sharing stories with those who'd never heard them. Winterfell is as old as House Stark. It's said our founder Bran the Builder raised its walls with the help of giants eight thousand years ago. He raised the Wall as well after the Long Night was ended, hewn with ancient magic from pure cold. His warm eyes looked up at the walls in amazement at his own family's legacy. Durran Godsgrief was able to convince him to construct Storm's End, the same is said of King Uthor and his construction of their High Tower. They passed the second wall and into the keep proper, Rickard dismounted fluidly. And now, here we are - Brandon's kin still living and his construts still standing with legends of their own.

The youngest siblings, the wolf pups, had slunk off from their tutoring and were playing at swords in the courtyard - the cranky protests of the maester interrupting their fun as he came out to search for them. She was directed toward the godswood, where Rickard could often be found when not with his siblings, adventuring or performing his duties. Winterfell's godswood was an ancient thing filled with beautiful trees and dotted with numerous hot spring pools, the Old Gods could be heard through the leaves for those still listening for them. The Lord of Winterfell sat beneath the Weirwood heart tree, playing a quire stringed instrument made from a turtle's shell. He was quite the musician and it seemed as if the tree's face had a smile hiding behind its stoic eyes, thankful for the performance and the company. Lord Stark found himself too caught up in his play to notice Lady Umber entering into view.

Lady Darla could not help but smile at the sight and sound.

You are better every time I see you, Rickard.

I'd know that voice anywhere. Rickard remarked as his grey eyes raised up to catch a glimpse of Darla. Cousin. He said warmly, a summer's smile creeping its way across his face. I may get better but you seem to get lovelier every time I see you.

She chuckled and moved towards him, indicating the space beside him. May I? She sat down anyway and eyed his instrument, a smile on her lips. You are too kind to me, Rick, always have been. The Flattering Wolf, they should call you.

Rickard laughed, a thing sweeter than honey. I'm sure me and the gods wont mind the company. He tightened one of the strings, strumming to ensure the sound was just right. I suppose the Laughing Wolf works just as well, after all I have been known to do a bit of both. He noticed Darla eyeing the instrument. Would you care to try?

She blushed slightly and nodded sheepishly. You must promise not to laugh, Laughing Wolf...I am not...she plucked at it a bit, until the semblance of a tune issued forth, the best of players. Her smile widened as she got into the swing of it and a proper song was strummed by her long, elegant fingers.
