Default [Proposals/WIP] 1050 AD: The Rise of Realms

Currently I am in the process of designing a rather ambitious idea, this is my showpiece to show what I've learned, what I can do, before moving on to more serious projects (Not that I'm not serious about this, I am, but I'm the only one who is, because right now I'd be no use to a team, I'm learning this is how i gauge my skill, by working on smaller projects, unit creation, animation swapping, DB entry, coding, etc).

This will take years, i know this, that's okay. I'm not looking for help, I might need some when it comes to installers and bat files, but that's atleast a year or two from now, if this ever gets finished at all.

    What is the mod:

It is a mod starting in 1050AD ending in around 1580 focusing on historical authenticity, and indepth weapon and armour evolution, and historical event elements, will include a more detailed map, with some of the new world, Iceland, and more historical (based on those resulting by military conquest rather than administrative) boundaries and middle east, focusing on the rise of the "Great Powers" of the future eras, although this is mostly an arbitrary hierarchy rather than a artistic one, as unless memory modding becomes viable before release, we will be limited on how many units and factions we can have, therefore the more north east a faction is, the less attention it will receive, in fact much of russia may have to be omitted entirely, and the mongols, and middle eastern factions, and the aztech may be a bit bland, as the time period is so vast. However I hope to split the mod into five parts, assuming I can transfer save games into other parts, one about every 1000 years, (so starts in 1050,1240,1340,1430,1510 -ending with the union of the crowns in 1603-5) and therefore allowing more detail, the ones from previous part must be in the next one, but units that go out of fashion need not.

The difference between authentic and accurate, accuracy means time, rather than in 1400 wales re-energies under owen glendower if you've taken them, it's triggered instead by another factor, I.e. repression, i.e. relying on garrisoned units to keep order.

    Some examples of features:

Re-emerging factions, some factions will rebel based hopeful on soico-economic factors, or dates.

Realm's names will change via external bat files where appropriate.

A.I Factions will only attack things that make sense, I.e. an enemy they are already at war with, via an allies territory, or nations bordering their own, or very weak nations.

There will be multiple armies per faction, you will not be limited to just one stack in the early game, diplomatically you will face more opposition based on how powerful you are, as other nations will see expansion as a threat to their own borders.

New realms will emerge part way through the game as appropriate.

There will be 500 units, each with full weapons and armour upgrades, only mandatory deviations from history will be made, other than game play, each faction will have a unique unit.

Rebels will seduce your generals, if they can, and they will make war on you.

New agents: Drill master, Engineer. Reducing Cost, and adding Build/move points to armies.

Ten religions, each with their own priests (unless these count as different agents then it will only be the major five.)

    These will be:

Most likely not. These kind of projects are usually way too ambitious and it is too much work to get it completed with a reasonable amount of time and energy invested. Just look at the tons of research you have to do in order to get an idea of the different factions, cultures, units and their development over 500 years(!). There is a reason why Vanilla M2TW is rather crap historical wise. Just take the EB II project as an example, which isn't completed after years being worked by up to 100 persons - and this is built on an already existing mod.

My advice: pick something more simple. A limited time frame, a single region, a few factions, not more than two or three different cultures

And why would I do that? I'm more than happy to digg around for history, TBH it's the most fun part I'm not really seeing all that much work tbh... Other than things I want to do anyway. XD

Let me ask it this way: how many mods had you completed so far?

Full mods, none. Mini-mods, six, in eight weeks. I wanna learn how to mod, I want this thing to exist, I have only free time, occasionly I'm in hospital, but even then, I am at a loose end, I'm looking to fill my time, this seem like a mildly productive thing.

I don't think it is, I'm modding basicly 9-5, as my life is on hold, and I'm not working on this persay for all that time. currently making armour upgrades sub-mod for Gondor in TTATW using the provided assets and Taro's OSP, which should be released by next week, unless I get an offer of unpaid sex. (I'm not working atm, for medical reasons, not many people want an unstable escort.)

But yeah, I want to learn how to do this, if I can make a full mod in MTW2 in the next 5 years, I'm good with that, I'm not proposing that this is going to be anything more than a hobby, but right now, I only have hobbies, and as I don't have the money for wargaming, as what little expendable income I've got is going on HEMA, then well, I'm happy to do this. Maybe it will never get finished, maybe it will never get started, but, I've played most mods, and to be honest, with the exception of TTA, the last kingdom, EBII, BC, and the Italian wars. I think I can do it better, or improve on it a wee bit.

And hey, so long as I can prove to myself that I can do all these things, I'm not beyond paying other people to finish it for me if I start work again.

I'm just saying this isn't the first time I've seen this sort of thread. There are dozens of similar threads where someone posts how they are going to make the "best mod eva", and 5 years down the line the only thing to come of it is a few concept wips.

Dude I've been here for like, almost five years, I've seen them too, this is just somewhere to dump this idea, it's something I'll work upto, and to be honest, i'm not really changing that much, extending the map a little to the left, re-defining the regions, changing up some factions, adding some units, making a few scripts, it's not a peice of cake, but I want to eat it anyway.

Go for it , years worth of modding has resulted in enough resources available to modders to make their visions come to fruition . Besides the modding scene for mtw2 could use more projects, we should encourage ambition not discourage it.

What b257 said. Go for it. Yeah, it's true that 99% of the mods of this scope are rarely ever completed, especially if you intend to do this on your own (more or less), but it is entirely possible, as it has been done before. The only thing stopping you is yourself.

And let's say that you don't finish this. At least you learned along the way, right? As long as you're happy with what you have accomplished and with what you learned along the way, then nothing else really matters.

Best of luck to you, mate!
