Apparently, from what I've been reading, Venice is the hardest faction. What do you guys think is the hardest faction?? I haven't gotten the game as of yet, but when I get it I want to play as the hardest faction.

what about byzantine empire
its not easy for them, as the catholic factions are making crusades on your land, and muslim countries making jihads on your capital
Um caruje, Snaga klade valja!!!
Byzantines is definitely one of the hardest. The best gunpowder you get is the weakest and earliest cannon, for one. I thought gunpowder was useless until I met it on the sea, and used it in a multiplayer game (Janissary gunmen smote dismounted knights in literal rows.)
I had a hard time with Sicily but I am told it's an easier faction. I'd have to go with byzantium for now.
Probably Byzantines and Russia.
I'm playing Venice on vh/vh and its VERY HARD !
I think the Hungarians have it pretty rough... they have no good anti-cavalry units until tieir 4 in the barracks (pavise spearmen) but they are surrounded by cavalry-producing whores (Byzantines, Polish, HRE).... on top that they are the most at risk of becoming landlocked, and in all likelihood won't have a port until around turn 25-30... this means trade is not a great option for making money, so it's hard to field a large army to garrison all of your settlements effectively... and you have very few natural borders... basically wide open to attack from all sides by whosoever decides they hate you first...
If you can survive the early game as the Hungarians you're in good shape, though... you can take advantage of Constantinople's declining power and have an Orthodox adversary to beat up on.
Under the patronage of lawngnome. Patron of lawngnome.
Byzantium... I always saw Byzantium got killed by Hungary or Turks without any hope, hence I believe they are the hardest.
By the way, I find Venice is not hard... I can finish Milan in first twenty turns, then move to HRE. However, the lack of cavalry is a big issue for Venice (and their infantries are no so superior too).
The near perpetual warfare against the Turks, Hungarians and Venice can leave Byzantium in a bit of a hurt. So far I’ve managed to save my neck by defeating a massive Hungarian horde outside of Constantinople and buying off the Turks so I can focus on the West. It’s an interesting challenge, given you are literally surrounded by enemies and besieged by both Islam and Catholicism. Orthodox guerilla warfare is hilarious, though. Go, priest army! Convert the heathens!
