Default Custom battle units very confusing + Testudo, reform & AOR questions

I realise that this game is a work in progress and I have the new patch 2.02. I would like to add this mod is great and your work is to be commended.

    1. Testudo - Im sure I read somewhere on another forum that the Testudo could not be implemented as the game did not support it. Could this still be done even if it meant the extreme of a patch to the actually Medieval2 game files. I ask because when I was modding Farming simulator all the other modders told me I couldn't do a certain thing I wanted to implement as it was hard coded into the game, I eventually found a way round it.

    2. Reforms - Marius reforms, I was looking on the battle browser for some early legionaries or the different cohorts you usually see in RomeTW 1 (don't have Rome2 yet) I cannot find any, there is however a load of units that seem to be from all over not just from Rome. Which brings me to my final question...

    3. Custom battle units - When using middle or late unit selection, I get inundated with what seems like all the units in the game and its very confusing. I was selection an army for the Britons and I sure there where Indians, Egyptians and Africans. This may need looking at or at least explaining as its far to confusing for me to try and select troops. I understand that some of the Roman troops are AOR units but should there be that many? Maybe there could be a button to turn them off on custom battle.
(I think AOR units are units that are recruited locally and not trained by the faction?? I don't know ive seen it in a few mods recently maybe someone could explain)

Also the view of unit description needs looking at as I cant see what is displayed as its too faded it blurs in with the background.

    Hi,

1 - even if it can be done, it was used at the end of the mod's timing, so i really doubt that you are going to see that in EB. Also messing with the .exe file is always a tricky bussiness and a very grey area.

2 - The reforms are not in game yet. The Polybian Romans will come at the big summer release, but the Marian probably not, unless we get some new artists.

3 - Use the early unit selections; if you use the others, you get all the AOR units you can get, so it's hard to find your factional ones only.

    Regards,

It's not even gray area but a sure way to get in very big trouble.

If somebody releases a modified .exe then of course it is.

However as a Silent Hunter III player, I can confirm that this legal boundary was avoided by the community by having each player himself patch his personal installation of the game. No modified .exe were distributed, just a tool that has the potential to modify it and an instruction on how to do it.
That way many hardcoded features could be modified.

Wouldn't something like that be legal for Total War games too?

It think it must be, because it's for private use only and not mass distributed. Like editing a movie I've bought for my private use or changing parts on my car, nobody can deny that

I would advise not to explain how it is done here on TWC. Nor to link to how it is done. We do take our rules seriously (the 'advocating and encouraging' part provides an interesting read)

Nobody should be able to deny that but oh how they certainly try. As such I do not think we will ever EVER condone that until someone else has risked their own legal affairs doing so and received no backlash or some sort of admission from CA that this is technically legal. Otherwise best not to even discuss it and if you do, do it on some other forum. We do not welcome any retribution from CA here.

The OP's questions have been answered, so there's no need for further ifs or if nots. Thread should be closed, it has served its purpose.

Testudo could probably be visual eye candy if implemented by utilizing different animation sets for schiltrom or guard mode stance- whether there is an actual point to this...I do not think there is personally as likely only roman units would use it. And even then the AI would only rarely activate the mode, not to mention that the player wouldn't grasp that it provides no actual benefits outside of the likely hard coded pre existing effects namely a bonus versus cav for schiltrom and a less moving forward during close contact for guard mode. There may also be animation glitches/bugs during attack animations while in that stance...
