Default Can the battle-map music be more epic this time around?

Gentlemen, for the record, I first wish to declare that the opening score for EB I and EB II is the stuff of legend. I remember when I first heard that song years ago when EB I was the first RTW mod I ever played (before Roma Surrectum II and Invasio Barbarorum). That opening song for the menu still gives me goosebumps. It's a masterpiece. For that matter the campaign map music for each faction is simply gorgeous, it is perfection reached as far as songs for video games (mods most of all) are concerned.

And then we come to the battle map, which is something else entirely. It would be generous to say it leaves something to be desired. To put it bluntly: it's no good. The EB team, attempting in good faith to make every aspect of the game authentic to the ancient world, has misguidedly attempted to apply that to the musical scores when I'm trying to have thousands of sweaty men shove swords into people's guts as their enemies cry out in death throes and die before them. Some of the drumming is okay for this, but overall the music is just simply too soft, bland, and dare I say flaccid and sterile for this sort of activity. I might be hopelessly cursed and biased, being a death metal fan, but your music for the battle map just lacks all the oomph, raw power, intensity, and the gritty adrenaline-fueled rage that a real battle would possess, or for that matter a battle portrayed in a movie (think Hans Zimmer's score for the 2000 film Gladiator).

Leaving the menu and campaign map music untouched, I've already modded the "descr_sounds_music.txt" file (with new music.dat and index.dat files) with the following tracks for the battle map. I've noticed right away that my battles finally have some hefty testicular weight, something that was missing all along, that feeling of actual immersion on the field of battle that your noble but ill-judged attempt in making modern takes on genuine ancient music has failed to do. Now it feels like I'm actually fighting to the death in each battle, that each battle means something, the situation is always dire, and I always have to kick ass or face the consequences of slaughter and defeat. Here are some of the tracks I've put into the battlefield, courtesy of the music company Audiomachine and their album "Chronicles":

There's also this from X-Ray Dog, song track entitled "Here Comes the King":

I'm already having a blast with this stuff, but I beg of you, for the sake of other players, in the next release of EB II please consider changing the battle map music. The music of this game doesn't have to be a carbon copy of EB I anyways, even if you guys decided out of nostalgia to use the same music in this mod for the sake of continuity (or perhaps this time around you didn't have the time or resources to craft new music). In either case, hear my plea, and give it a chance. Surely everyone is also tired of hearing the same old songs anyways?

    I like EBs battle songs...

Really, the whole EB soundtrack is awesome. Though there is something I can suggest. You ofter hear those same tracks playing over and over again, so maybe adding tracks that are more like background ambiance rather than music could be desirable. This make the other songs play less often, but also allow those other other songs to stand out as audio highlights.

I am of the opinion that the current soundtrack is fine. The songs you linked to are, for lack of a better word, extremely generic. Or rather, they are done in a generic 'Hollywood movie soundtrack' style. The songs would work on a classical battlefield. They would also fit a medieval battlefield scene. Or a renaissance battlefield. A fantasy battle in Middle Earth. A Warhammer fantasy battle.

The style here is 'generic exciting movie music'. One that fits decently in many situations, but lacks any form of flavour as a result. Given that one of EB's greatest strengths is in immersion, I don't think these would improve EB at all. Quite the opposite, in fact.

It's always good to have discussions, but yes, I have to agree with most of the other posters here 100%. In terms of music, the only thing I could request of the EBII team would be... "please make more.."!!

And we have! In the summer release there will be many more tracks.

OMG are you serious? And to think I couldn't wait before.. but now...

    Thanks EBII team

We've recently integrated epiccaesarlol's sound mod into the development build, and we have new tracks from Michael Levy and chur. So there will be new audio in later releases.

However, one of the primary aims of the music in EBII is to aid immersion with sounds as close as we are able to get to ancient music. We will not be getting Hans Zimmer style generic-bombastic music, nor any other modern artists.

And this is why I love EB (and what makes it unique). Immersion and authencity are hard to find these days, and EB does it best.

Those sound way too generic. I think the current soundtrack is fine and they have shown some good stuff on the twitter as well.

Yeah i have to agree that it's way too generic. I love the EB soundtrack. I love how you actually feel like you are leading an army of a certain age and era, really immersful. I get the OP's idea though, but imo it's much much better the way it is now.

I'm sorry to say but that's quite a stupid tittle...

I can understand partially your way, but it's not what we're trying to do here.

I like it and honestly most of the generic modern movie music you posted is boring after you heard it a few times.

Edit:Funny I didn't actually read the other answers before I wrote.Seem like I'm not the only one.

    Hi Roma_Victrix,
I like your selection of music too and it's always nice to have an option to change if you like another style of music. Is it possible for you to upload it somewhere so I and others can download and try your edited files ? Maybe as some kind of submod ?

Just asking and no offence to the originals that are fine to me too...
    Cheers !

Damn, no one agrees with me. It's no skin off my back, because like I said, I already have the music in game. I thought many others would have the same opinion: boy was I wrong!

Thanks, but I did indicate in my OP that I liked some of the powerful drumming. As for songs with great percussion and overall power, this is perhaps the greatest track in the whole EB body of music, the nomadic battle theme:

Quite frankly this song should be heard in every battle, in every region, not just the steppe. It's a masterpiece.

It's actually incredibly easy to do it yourself. Here's a small tutorial.

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...-Add-own-music

Basically, you just do the following:

    1) Go into EB's main "Data" folder and open the "sounds" folder
    2) In the "music" folder there, add the new mp3 music tracks that you would like to hear (from your own personal library), or paste over the existing music tracks (using the same track titles but with different mp3 files and songs altogether).
    3) Back in the "sounds" folder, send four files to the trash bin for deletion: "music.dat", "music.idx," "events.dat," and "events.idx". It is highly recommended that you copy and back up these files somewhere on your computer (or an external drive) before deleting them, because you could easily make a mistake somewhere else and need to quickly replace them!
    4) Now go back to the main "data" folder and in the list of files there is a "descr_sounds_music.txt" file. Open it and copy and paste the names of the new mp3 files into the fields for various cultures where it says ";;; BATTLE MAP".

For instance, in RTW, you see something like this:

    state MUSIC_BATTLE_TENSION
    event
    folder data/sounds/music
    Tension1-Journey_to_Rome_Part1.mp3
    Tension2-Caesars_Nightmare.mp3
    Tension3-Death_Approaches.mp3
    Tension4-Drums_of_Doom.mp3
    end

    state MUSIC_BATTLE_MOBILIZE
    event
    folder data/sounds/music
    Mobilize1-Journey_to_Rome_Part2.mp3
    Mobilize2-Warrior_March.mp3
    Mobilize3-Enemy_is_Near.mp3
    Mobilize4-Army_of_Drums.mp3
    Mobilize5-Mobilize.mp3
    Mobilize6-Soldiers_Chant.mp3
    Intro_Roman_Scipii.mp3
    Intro_Roman_Brutii.mp3
    end

    state MUSIC_BATTLE_BATTLE
    event
    folder data/sounds/music
    Battle1-Imperial_Conflict.mp3
    Battle2-Mayhem.mp3
    Battle3-Melee_Cafe.mp3
    Battle4-Romantic_Battle.mp3
    end
You can add new mp3 files into these lists or even replace these files with the names of your new tracks. Keep in mind that "TENSION" means the songs for the pre-battle speech or whenever your army is idle. "MOBILIZE" naturally means the songs that play when your army is on the move and you are marching around or taking enemy missile fire. "BATTLE" obviously means the songs that play when you are finally engaged in a melee fight with the enemy.

I hope that helps! If not, you can use B0Gia's excellent sound submod which has the original Rome Total War soundtrack composed by the legendary Jeff van Dyck:

Honestly I liked the original MTW2 a lot more comparing original RTW with MTW2 music. Especially for drums.

Agreed, but it was the same composer who made both (Jeff Van Dyck), and from the MTW2 soundtrack the best track was perhaps "Crusaders."

    SO INTENSE!

That's what I'm talking about when I refer to power and intense music that's fit for battles.

Of course, for that, you could always put metal into your soundtrack. It would break immersion, though.

Drive the foe out of hiding
In the open they are slaughtered
    Rounding up the population
Wives and children, sons and daughters
    Stand facing the firing squad
    With orders to be executed
    A sudden, blinding flash
ALL AROUND YOU BURNS TO ASH!

Lol. Bonus points to whoever spots the inflatable doll in this mosh pit.

However, we know almost nothing about ancient music beyond a handful of melodies.

With ancient music it's almost all interpretation and guesswork.
Probably 10 times more so than with medieval music which is problematic enough.

Well, that's where the difference between authenticity and accuracy comes in. Short of some new discoveries, we'll never be able to really come up with a large repertoire of accurate ancient music. Authentic though, sounding what music might've sounded like (or at least using period instruments)? That's certainly doable.

Interpretations of the same medieval piece, by reputable ensambles (I don't mean some semi-pop nonsense), can be drastically different.

With the limited ancient repertoire it's even worse, the same piece is sometimes barely recognisable in different interpretations.
