Following the death of their King Renly Baratheon, Mace Tyrell gathered all of his bannerman for a Great Council at Highgarden. The had been rumors spreading around the Reach that their liege lord would now bend the knee to Stannis, while others believe that the Reach would support Renly's heir, Edric Storm, the bastard son of King Robert.Notably absent from the feast was Lord Mace's youngest son, Loras. It is said that he has not left his chambers since hearing of the death of King Renly.
The room was very quiet, everyone waiting to hear whom they would be fighting for next. Then, finally, it came time for Lord Mace to speak.
"Ever since the Conquest, my family has led the Reach into great prosperity both under the Targaryens and Baratheons. Renly Baratheon would have made a great King, a King I would be willing to serve, however, Renly Baratheon is dead. Robert's bastard Edric has little more claim to the throne than Joffrey ever did, and Stannis is a heretic, and not a man I wish to serve"
The whole room was in shock, if Mace did not plan to fight for Edric or Stannis, that could only mean one thing.
Lord Tyrell reached down, and from underneath his chair pulled out the ancient Crown of Vines and Flowers worn by the Gardener Kings before him.
"For the first time, House Tyrell will rule as the King of the Reach. The Reach is the most bountiful and richest region in Westeros, and has yet to be touch by this war. Anyone that opposes us will meet the ends of our blades, including whomever sits the Iron Throne."
Growing Strong
Even with the recent deceleration of Mace Tyrell as King, the flower lords still wanted to show a sign of respect to their late King, Renly Baratheon, by killing Collin Florent:
