    GIMP

    DDS Plugin

GIMP with the dds plugin will give you everything you need to make skins. When you open a new skin file (realistically you will only be able to edit existing skins unless you have 3dsmax) press Ctrl+L to bring up you layers option. Delete all the layers that say "Mipmaps." You should be left with one layer. Then make the changes to your skin, save as a tga.dds file extension, compress to DXT5 and allow for the generation of mipmaps. Make sure red to alpha IS NOT checked. And thats all you do

If you have the means Adobe Photoshop is better, but for freeware you will not find a better tool than GIMP. It is much more powerful a program than people give it credit for.

Sorry for my ignorance! Why do one needs to do that. What`s the reason and, of course what`s the consequence for not doing so? I didn`t know about it and I made modifications to some textures (changed a shield with another one from a similar texture - for example) and then I think I got a message telling me something about layers, but I saved the texture non the less (without checking the mipmap option and the red to alpha) and I was able to use the modified texture in the game. No apparent problem. So, is there any reason to do it all over again? Thanks!
