    Default Freaking Excommunicated

Okay so playing as France I got excommunicated. Could not have happened at a worse time since I had a full stack Crusader army ready to take Jerusalem had I just one more turn!
A new pope was elected from Venice, a neutral faction that was (I assume) at odds with Milan, who had recently declared war on me. The new Pope told me to make peace in 5 turns or suffer excommunication. Well, 2 turns later I was excommunicated!!!

Why would a Venetian Pope want to excommunicate me? My relations with the Papacy were quite good prior to this.

Milan attacked me, not the other way around. The only provocation I can see are my policies of executing prisoners and assassinations. But those things have never touched off any wars.

Maybe Milan had better relations with the pope, at least in my game this was an influence when I attacked the HRE....he excommunicated them rather than risk my ire (I had perfect relations with the pope).

In my game as France, I was excommunicated by the Pope, who then asked for a Crusade against me! Now, the Danes are sending their Crusader army against me in Toulouse...

Actually, the pope is rather retarded... I'm having much more fun playing a muslims (Turks) army than christians ones...

I've been having problems with pope too. When Veniced attacked me (playing HRE) and sieged couple of my cities, I then sallied the fort and won the attackers, but the pope gets angry. Yes, I understand, sallying is an attack anyway, but I had no choice, since my income was low due to sieging.
Then, when I fought a defensive field battle against Venice (I had better relations with the pope), I thought I should release the prisoners after the battle so the pope wouldn't get pissed off. Well, I released them, and relations with pope were plummiting again..
Nothing I can do about it, I have to defend myself. I think I'll kill the pope soon. =)

Fenris, the problem is that I still have to finish a first campaign before choosing non-catholic factions.

No you don't. Just edit the desc_strat file to make all unlockable nations playable from the start.
