Default Fort Defence in the Field.

Playing as the ERE I have found the ultimate weapon for the field- the fort. My question is how best to deploy the 4 deployables among the six gates. I have my armies stacked as 5 spear; 5 swords, 4 ,missiles 1 General (of course) 2 mounted and 3 onagers. I usually place a row of spikes in between a row of stakes at the two sides of the fort and then beef up the front and rear gates which are unprotected with a unit each of spear and sword. Keeping the mounted back to clean up the battlefield as much as possible once a rout has occurred. Any suggestions on how to better make use of these deployables is very welcomed. Tnx.

That seems as good a distribution of the deployables as any. Mildly annoying to me is that one can't place the things immediately outside the entrances...which would be the most logical place to put them.

Another method is to figure out the enemy's most likely direction, then gamble that he's going to actually start there. In which case, load up the two gates facing that way with the deployables, and then V-shape two units behind them. That way they have to wade through the caltrops and stakes to even make melee contact. Of course...whenever I try to do this, the wily Hun always comes from a different direction...and the deployables aren't much of a factor.

Your last sentence tells it all. It seems as tho the enemy invented binoculars since, in my experience they attack from a totally different direction and when they do it seems that the infantry will negotiate the barriers with ease to start the show and destroy most of the stakes in the process. Only once did the mounted come full tilt into the stakes with the expectant result.

I had an amazing fort battle once. 8000 men on my side, and about 24,000 on the enemy's. I was ERE and they were Sassanid.

I ended up losing about half my force, but they lost almost the entirety of theirs'. They attacked every single entrance of the fort at once.

If it weren't for those arrow towers, I would have lost for sure.
