What a load of bollocks, what a way to destroy modding
In just a few days of testing and a dozen paid mods there was A LOT of poison and drama in the Nexus.

I can't even begin to imagine what it would had been if this had been greenlighted completely for Skyrim or for other games.

Monetizing mods will simply destroy the communities.

Considering the modding community was practically tearing itself apart over this, it doesn't sound like it was exactly that strong of a community to begin with .

No actually because the community was so strong they teared itself apart

    And... WE WON

    To set the mood:

Then, as throngs of his enemies bore down upon him and one of his followers said, "They are making at thee, O King," "Who else, pray," said Antigonus, "should be their mark? But Demetrius will come to my aid." This was his hope to the last, and to the last he kept watching eagerly for his son; then a whole cloud of javelins were let fly at him and he fell.

Crumbling at the first bit of pressure doesn't sound very strong .
The consumer won more then anything and im sure Valve got some good field testing done for the next version.

While I don't oppose the idea of paid mods on principal like many do, I think this was implemented poorly so it's good that it's gone.

I think potential paid mods need to be policed and curated well, which is obviously something that Steam has no interest in doing, so until they do I think the best they can offer would be an "offical" donate button which gives at least 60% profits to the author while Valve and Beth split the rest.

The paid workshop might be over, but the damage done to the Skyrim modding community in the four days it was active is done. It won't be the same.

This feature will probably be coming back.

A cynic might think they tested it on Skyrim as a testbed because it is a game essentially at the end of its life cycle (concerning active support and monetization), it has such a big mod community and there are games in development where they probably want to hit the mark on how to monetize mods from the start. Well, if that's the case let's hope they will find a more varied approach that is indeed benefitting to all.
"Sebaceans once had a god called Djancaz-Bru. Six worlds prayed to her. They built her temples, conquered planets. And yet one day she rose up and destroyed all six worlds. And when the last warrior was dying, he said, 'We gave you everything, why did you destroy us?' And she looked down upon him and she whispered, 'Because I can.' "

This will be back i am sure. They had to test public reaction and the public wasn't ready to embrace this crap, yet.

The steam workshop payment feature has been removed, so no need to have more than one of these threads.
