Can't fight enemy barbarian army?

Hi , so convinced by a friend that told me Attila was better than RTWII I decided to get it ... but ... honestly I am not seeing much difference atm ... anyway I just started the campaign as west romans , I have created a massive army and I decided to pick a barbarian clan after the other ... but every time I approach the enemy army mine stops right at their border red zone and doesn't allow me to engage , then next turn when I approach , they flee, Its becoming frustrating as its 20 turns like that and I had not been able one single time to engage into a damn fight !

what's wrong ?

it looks like either u run out of movement points, or your army is in forced march stance, give us a screenshot

or zone of control problem maybe?

and other problem is AI, they run like a coward mostly.

Try Better Agressive AI mod, I recommend.

I find it more realistic if AI retreats and then attacks when it has bigger numeric/unit quality advantage, however i see why it may be annoying for some hasty players

AI retreats till got u 3/1 something (which mostly wont happen), isnt it annoying?

It's not about being Hasty..

And let me tell you something, they were after my hordes with crazy amount of stacks, but when I would stop and come near to them, all would run away (Not talking about running away from battle, it's without battle)

Then I made "no forced march" mod and started using Better AI mod, so problems mostly solved

If they are not good against me, they will retreat, but at least not when they see me near lol

Ah that cheat, yea it's every1's problem, AI can by-pass the Zone of control (that red area) , but player can't.

I dunno, but I have tried even surrounding the AI to block its escape routes . I do not find this meaning that the AI is more smart . I have the same army numbers overall and probably crappier troops , I am playing at legendary , but whatever I do AI always espace direct confrontation and when I am pretty sure to reach it , I get into that red zone that blocks me , I can move around that but not in it and engage . Looks like a silly cheat by the AI .

well that cheat of AI i'm not sure, but AI being coward, yes, check #3rd post or my signature (Better AI)

About Zone of Control, it's easy to lower with PFM (pack file manager)

Mods? No, I don't think any of them invalidate

This is how to decrease Zone of control (vanilla value is 5, i made 4)

Open it with Pack file manager (can be found on forum) if u wanna merge it with another mod, copy paste etc, well u mostly know how to do

If no other mods.. No need that, just use it

Im playing legendary as well and i find AI quite aggressive, it uses reinforcements when possible but it also wont shy from battle when numbers are the same. As for not being able to attack through zone of control it may be that u encountered this bug which they hadn't fixed yet.

Well I'm playing as Huns with hard difficulty, maybe AI's battle policy is different with Hordes as diplomacy

There is a hatred for Hordes obviously, still. They would follow me with their armies but there wouldnt be battle, unless I divide my Hordes

Idk if Radious mod had something do to with it but I don't think so, as a lot ppl says the same.

Yes, you're movement points aren't enough to hit the target so you stop at their zone of control line. To stop them running away you need to use a spy to "hinder army", this reduces their movement points so they can't retreat far enough to avoid you. Another thing is ambush mode, then they run into you.

Yep, "Misdirect Army" (spy ability) is usually how I catch 'em.

The AI is expert at positioning its armies just outside the reach of your own. Obviously, the AI cheats by knowing the range of your army's movement.

But that's fine with me. I just take their settlement and there's nothing they can do about that!

there is no fun with taking AI city without fighting any army..
and that also making much harder to finish-off the factions..
