    Default Al-Jazeera English Hits Airwaves!

    Hooray!

    Al-Jazeera English hits airwaves

The Arabic television news channel al-Jazeera has launched its new English-language station.

Al-Jazeera English began broadcasting from the station's headquarters in Doha, Qatar, at 1500 (1200 GMT).

A screen graphic with a clock ticking down the minutes gave way to a photo montage of the biggest news stories of recent years, including 9/11.

Al-Jazeera in Arabic is known for its forthright style, frank journalism and willingness to discuss taboo issues.

This has made it a thorn in the side of governments from Washington to Riyadh, says the BBC's Ian Pannell in Cairo.

After the opening credits, presenters Shiulie Ghosh and Sami Zeidan ushered in the new channel, saying it would be "setting the news agenda".

"It's November 15th, a new era in television news."

The channel then went to images of correspondents in various locations including Gaza then Sudan's Darfur region, followed by Iran and Zimbabwe.

As it went on air, the channel had to contend with a breaking news story on a tsunami expected to hit Russia and northern Japan.

    'Middle Eastern feel'

Al-Jazeera English will initially broadcast for 12 hours a day before becoming a 24-hour news operation from 1 January.

It will broadcast from studios in Doha, Kuala Lumpur, London and Washington DC, in addition to 20 other countries.

It will be available to 80 million homes - double its target audience - in Europe, Africa and south-east Asia.

In the United States, the channel will be available via a broadband internet connection, but not distributed by a major cable or satellite system.

Originally due to launch in 2005, the station employs some 800 people from 55 countries and hopes to bring a different perspective to international events.

"It is definitely an international channel, but it's certainly going to have a Middle Eastern feel about it," one of the channel's presenters, Felicity Barr, told the BBC.

"The instant reaction for, say, a Western organisation, is to get analysis from the United States or from the UK," she explained.

"We will be getting our reaction, first and foremost, from the Middle East."

The channel is hoping to revolutionise English-language television in the same way it revolutionised Arabic-language television 10 years ago.

But our correspondent says this will be a much harder task.

    Established rivals

Al-Jazeera's achievement in the Middle East was to break a monopoly on information held by governments and state broadcasters, our correspondent says.

But the international market is already much more developed with well established rivals in the BBC and CNN.

"One of our goals is to reverse the flow of information to the south," Wadah Khanfar, director general of the al-Jazeera Group explained to Reuters news agency.

While the hope is that a major English-language channel operating from the Middle East will give the Arab world a global voice, our correspondent says the launch will simply be a moment of pride.

But, he adds, the question for some in the region is whether the new channel will be as outspoken as its sister station and whether it will adopt a similar editorial stance.

The arab version of Fox News...oh joy! Just more white noise to the mix. With French media companies trying to do the same all we need is China and we are set! Oh well guess the more point of views available the better but not so sure about that now a days...the internet has jaded that perspective.

I think this is a great idea. I'd prefer to have points of view from both sides if possible from as many sources as possible.

Al Jazeera was banned from Iraq by the Iraqi government for inciting violence.
They were banned in Iraq before as well.
By Saddam. For almost the same damn reason.
Whatever the truth of the allegations.
No Government in the world, and certainly not the ones in the middle east seem to like them.
And that is a good thing.

This will be available through TV, not just an obscure site on t'internet.
No, actually its on cable, not just some obscure site.

From what I've heard, the various Israeli governments since its inception seem to like al-Jazeera, regarding it as by far the most balanced of the Arabic language broadcasters, so that ministers would seek it out whenever they want to be interviewed on Arab TV. FWIW, many of the al-J journos have a BBC background, with Frost merely the highest profile of such.

So now instead of one biased view I get to see two biased views. Makes for better opinion forming.

Bias is an understatement for Al Jazeera.

Have you ever watched an al-jazeera broadcast or visited their web-site to read articles? Or are you simply basing this statement on your own bias against arabic and muslim journalists and television? Bet you think FoxNews is the most balanced and fair news provider in the world and is not biased at all either.

lol, dude come'on. Al Jazeera was banned from Iraq by the Iraqi government for inciting violence. It goes beyond being biased politically. A number of there reporters have been caught aiding the insurgency.

Unfortunately we in Canada won't get to see it at least not for a while.

"But it is not being broadcast in Canada and can be seen in only a few places in the U.S. The English-language network is an offshoot of the successful Arab network based in Doha, Qatar. The Arab-language network received CRTC approval to broadcast in Canada in 2004.

But the CRTC ordered a delay of the signal so carriers can monitor for offensive content and no cable company has been willing to take up the task of monitoring the station 24 hours a day, a condition that has also discouraged them from taking on the English-language network.

In the U.S., four minor operators with just a few thousand subscribers have agreed to carry the English network.
Talks recently broke down between Al-Jazeera and one major U.S. cable company, Comcast." From cbc.ca

In other words the CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television Commision) has made it very difficult and undesirable for any Canadian braodcaster to carry the signal.

Find me these biased stories that you speak off
The couple that I've read so far don't say "death to America" once, so I fail to see what your point is.

    Rocket attacks wound more Israelis

At least two Israelis have been seriously
    wounded by the attacks

A second Qassam rocket strike has seriously wounded an Israeli security guard and a youth in Sderot.

Israeli medical sources said that several other residents of the town were slightly injured in the attack on Wednesday, hours after a woman was killed by rockets fired from Gaza.

Israel told the Palestinians they would "pay a heavy price".

The armed wing of the ruling Hamas movement, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, said it fired at least two salvoes at Sderot and claimed responsibility for the death.

It said the rocket attack was in response to Israeli shelling last week that killed 19 Palestinian civilians.

The Islamic Jihad group said it had also launched two rockets later in the day.

Sderot is a frequent target of Palestinian rocket squads because it lies just five kilometres from Gaza. Rockets also hit a nearby village but no one was wounded.

    Not to biased.

This is probably the most biased line in an article one might expect to be dripping with bias; and it may not even be too biased:
"Israel told the Palestinians they would "pay a heavy price"."
