Gunners are extremely good ranged units, only the Zora mages seem to be in the same league as them.
Mechs, I keep around for roleplaying purposes, but I'm really not certain what their role is, they are too few for linemen, too slow for flankers, and to weak to break through lines on their own.

on Mechs:
They're one of the only things that can go toe to toe against most of the Legion. If you happen to have a lack of gunners late game, and have a surplus of these guys sitting around, try assaulting a Darknut city directly and show me the results. I've yet to lose like this.
I like to think of them as 'advanced Tokay', as well. They re strong, can take several gunshots right to the face and get back up, and are few enough that they won't get shot anyway, so I like to send them in the middle of a big-ass force that's charging your gunners to hold them at bay. They do some pretty wicked damage against any soldier that, again, isn't Legion. Costly, but worthwhile cannon-fodder/riot control. I find them better than the actual slaves.
On top of that, they double as a cavalry unit. They tend to knock anything they run into over, and have a pretty hefty morale drain on the enemy when they charge because of that fact. Like the Legion, they're one of the few 'infantry' troops that can smack up enemy cav. Try a few rounds against a couple goat lords.
The're also a petty fancy bum-rush unit. If you're trying to hold you position, rather than fight, send these guys out to deal with the artillery while you're musketeers mop up the assaulting force.
If you're doing a straight up infantry on infantry fight, stacks full, I've never seen these guys lose to anything less than a Darknut Mighty.
I keep telling people these guys are broken, but nobody seems to believe me, opting to blame the gunners - yes, they're broken as well, but only if they work properly. Half the time, the gunners seem to glitch out in this build, refusing to shoot when spread long in a 2x2 line. They like to constantly 'reload', and when they DO shoot, it's maybe five or six individual people.

what about steamtanks?

The steam tanks are solid replacements for cannons, they are easier to protect than cannon and are the closest thing to a elephant-type unit that the Labrynna Regime has.
After some tests, the above poster is more or less correct, though I would still prefer them to be closer to cavalry, at present there is no really good method of flanking for the Regime. They really do need some sort of Reiter-alike.

They also have no impact worth mentioning, are significantly slower than true cavalry, and cannot be mustered at any of the more advanced barracks.
The last is the sticking point for me personally.
Edit: After some tests, I have discovered that I misremembered their speed, they are only slightly slower than Hyrulean Knights, but the other points still stand.
