Default The Eyrie, Seat of house Arryn

THE EYRIE, SEAT OF HOUSE ARRYN

The Eyrie is the ancient seat of House Arryn, one of the oldest lines of Andal nobility. It is situated in the Mountains of the Moon astride the peak known as the Giant's Lance, several thousand feet above the valley floor below. It's considered impregnable to attack. During winter years, the Arryns seek refuge against the cold at the base of the mountain in the Gates of the Moon.

The Giant's Lance: The Eyrie is situated at the peak of the Giant's Lance, the highest mountain in all Westeros, and is further protected by the Gates of the Moon at the mountain's feet, and the three smaller castles of 'Stone', 'Snow' and 'Sky'. It is considered virtually impenetrable to any besieger foolhardy or unfortunate enough to have to attack it. +6 to siege defense rolls.

The Sky Cells: The Eyrie's prisons, the Sky Cells, are small open shelves in the mountainside that ever-so-slightly slant downward. They are notorious for terrifying their unlucky occupants so greatly that many choose to commit suicide than to continue to rot there, in danger of simply rolling off the edge in their sleep every night and constantly exposed to the elements. Escape is impossible from the Eyrie. Additionally, all prisoners have a 2/20 chance each year to die while in the Eyrie.

Flee to nowhere: Capture rolls of all characters in the Eyrie are increased by +2 chance of capture

    OOC: on two separate occasions

    Lady Mysa Darry
The banners of Darry were of a black farmer with his plough on a brown field. A dozen fluttered in the air as the column rode towards the Gates of the Moon. They were a hundred and one strong, knights both landed and unlanded, and men-at-arms in the paid service of the Lady herself.

We have come to speak with Lord Arryn, regarding matters of trade.

    Gormon Rosby
They had ridden for a long time, across three separate lands to arrive at their destination. The column numbered seventy seven, with seven banners flying overhead. They were Rosby retainers, wearing their colours proudly.

We have come to speak with the great Lord Arryn regarding matters of trade.

Both groups are allowed to enter, and both Gormon Rosby and Mysa Darry are granted a audience with Lord Jon Arryn.

    Lady Mysa Darry:

Lord Arryn's stern eyes studied Mysa for moment before he spoke. "My lady, I trust you encountered no issues while traveling? You group does seems large for a simple trade agreement, but i guess to pays to be prudent." He smiled and continued, "Now, what was it you wanted to discuss?'

    Gormon Rosby:

"Ah, Gormon Rosby i trust you had a pleasant, if long trip? What do you want to discuss?"

I believe that it would be very beneficial for both of our houses to see the trade flow between our people. The grain from Darry's fields will fill the bellies of the Arryns during the long years of winter while the mountain stone of the Vale would help to expand Darry in ways we could only dream of.

Mysa then smiles broadly to the Lord Arryn.

There is also a matter I wish to broach. I came here expecting a refusal but I cannot truly hold my tongue. If I did so then I would be restless until the end of my days.

    She allows herself a pause.

I understand that your daughter Elizabel is not yet betrothed?

    Gormon Rosby:

"Ah, Gormon Rosby i trust you had a pleasant, if long trip? What do you want to discuss?"

    Ser Gormon Rosby

He inclined his head to the Lord Arryn.

My father and I hoped that our two houses would be able to freely trade. The wealth generated from our perfumes and scents would greatly fill your coffers. They not only make money, but also prove to be the finest gifts to present with others of the nobility. The Vale stone would prove invaluable to the growth of Rosby.

Gormon allowed that to sink in before he presented his next topic.

My father wishes to offer the services of our house to you. Simply put, Lord Gyles believes that in the future we may be of great use to yourself. We merely wish to profess our admiration before such a time.

    Darry:

Jon smirked, "I accept the proposal of trade." He paused before continuing "However my Niece Elizabel is notoriously stubborn, so you would have to convince me, and her."

    Rosby:

Jon's eyes narrowed, this was unexpected. "What kind of services?"

Kermit Darry is heir to the High Lordship of Darry. It is no Lord Paramouncy, but it is a very wealthy seat. In time we will return to the dominant position in the riverlands we once held. There are a hundred lesser lords who would wish Elizabel's hand in marriage. The Darrys are a promising match. Kermit's father died for Ormund, and he himself is in training to become a knight like his father.

Jon's eyes narrowed, this was unexpected. "What kind of services?.
That would be left to the decision of you, my lord. You serve the king, and therefore we can serve you, be it military, financial or just offering advise and council.

Tarquin rode at the head of his retinue, all black and red. The cool mountain air was fresh upon his face, it was a pleasant change from King's Landing. This kingdom was one of the more beautiful, he felt. He admired the robust landscape and the purity of the climate, the culture of knighthood which was not softened with pomp as in the fragrant Reach. Here it was as hard and trustworthy as the stone underfoot and rising like towers all around.
After being admitted beyond the Bloody Gate, he expected word had reached the Eyrie itself well in advance. The Arryns' blue bannered escort rode fore and aft all the way from the Gate. The Knights of the Vale made their presence very clear at all times.
He dismounted at the foot of the Stone Stairs and awaited leave to continue.

    Darry:
Lord Arryn was surprised at the convincing case Lady Darry made. "You make some good points Lady Mysa, but alas i must weigh up other options. I will keep your offer in mind, and i may yet accept it but cannot agree to it just yet. is there anything else?"

    Rosby:
Jon rubbed his chin in thought. "Very well, I accept the offer of trade and tell Lord Gyles i appreciate his offer. Is there anything else you wished to discuss?"

That is all. I thank you for your hospitality and patience. Long life to you, lord Arryn.

With that, the rivermen returned homeward.

"Very well, I accept the offer of trade and tell Lord Gyles I appreciate his offer. Is there anythinf else you wished to discuss?
That is everything, my lord. I thank you for your time and understanding. Fair day to you.

    The crownlanders left shortly afterwards.

A letter arrives with the Baratheon seal upon it, the Baratheons of Dragonstone to be exact. The differences in sigils between the three brothers were subtle but distinct.

    Lord Arryn,

I apologize for not coming to the Eyrie in person to make this request my Lord, but my Kingly brother had urgent business he wished to discuss with me in the capital. As a lord in his late twenties, and heir to the Iron Throne, it has dawned upon me that I am long overdue in being wed to a young lady of suitable birth and status. In pursuit of that end it is my understanding that your young niece Elizabel remains, as of yet, unmarried. I would inquire if their have been any offers for her hand, and I extend my own hand to your Lady Niece as well. I do not know when, or if, I will be able to leave Kinglandings within the near future - but if this match interests you perhaps a visit to the capital for yourself and your niece is in order?

    [signed] Lord Stannis Baratheon

Tarquin bowed slightly, solemnly, before the Falcon Throne. It had been a long ride from the capital, it was well that Lord Jon received him. He was hoping for a little more pomp however.
"My lord, I have come to discuss trade and better bonds between our great Houses." He gestured to his court and retinue, "Perhaps there is somewhere where we can speak more intimately."

Lord Jon was surprised, what was it the Lannister wanted to discuss that warranted discretion?
"Very well, follow me, i have a room that is suitable." Lord Jon guided Tarquin to a room that could be described as a lounge.

Seating himself on one of the chairs, Lord Arryn spoke: "Now, what was it you wanted to discuss? I must let you know however that at the moment we do not have any goods to trade." (OOC Trades slots are filled up.) "But surely you did not come all this way for just that."

Tarquin sat himself comfortably in the warm room, sensing Lord Jon's curiosity. "Not just trade no, although I regret to hear that." He took a deep breath and gestured if he may help himself to mead on the table beside him. "You have a daughter the same age as my son."

Lord Jon studied Tarquin carefully. Of course that was why he was here, this would be the third proposal?
"Yes, I have a niece, who is effectively my daughter after the death of her father and mother." replied Jon, softly correcting Tarquin
"I must warn you i have had many offers for her hand already ser."

Though in truth he was still getting used to the idea of Elizabel as woman instead of a child. Yet the queen and his own wife where her age and married! But he had promised his brother that he would take care of his children, and Lord Jon intended to.

Tarquin sighed. "Well I will not bother you anymore on that matter. The offer stands. You know enough of my country and my house to understand the benefits before you." He sipped his mead. "I was surprised that you were not asked to stand as the Hand of the King, Lord Jon."

"As am i, though i do not begrudge the king, for Stannis deserves it as much as any man." Lord Jon smiled "But i am enjoying the peace and quiet, this time of relative stability is offering me."

"But what of you Tarquin? You are playing Lord while you brother goes gallivanting throughout Essos yes?"

"Play is hardly the word Lord Jon. It is a demanding duty but one I have no choice but to fulfill. The Lionhearted drains the coffers for his wars and is praised in Westerland song while I tax the folk to fill them again and am defamed in bawdy for it. So no, not 'play' -it's a dangerous game at that. I envy you your peace." Tarquin nodded, "Stability we have; in the doldrums after the Ironborn Rebellion but a new threat always arises sooner or later from with or without. I find the Stark words most prudent in these times, and will use these fat years to prepare for the days of hunger and strife ahead."

"It seems we speak the same language, Lord Jon." He massaged his stubble with a rough hand.
"If Tregarion returns there will be hell to pay. I am preparing as much as I can. I hope the king will intervene as and when the Lionheart goes too far, and he surely will sooner rather than later. It seems his last contract with Volantis was denied payment but he has arranged trade with them for now. I fear he will use this bought time to return, assemble an army and return to Volantis to make them pay in full. The consequences for Westeros..." He shook his head. "I'm tired of him. With luck he might die by the sword in a bed of his own making, before he brings trouble to the throne." He looked Jon in the eyes, "I digress... You wonder what I'm up too, eh? I have my hands full don't you think?"
