Default Where is/how do you find the general in a unit?

In previous TW games the general tended to be posted at the far left on the front line of his unit; RTW let you zoom to his location by clicking on the faction icon in the UI and it would zoom to his location, similarly in M2 you could double click on the unit and scroll in and it would show the general.

I have to admit that I never really found out for sure where the general was (centre of the front line?) nor did I know of a way to zoom to his location. In Attila, where (as the WRE) generals are all infantry units I need to know where he is so I can gauge whether or not to send the unit into combat, when to pull the unit back so he doesn't get killed etc (as well as helping define my tactics vs rebels) but I have no idea how it works. Do generals in Attila have set places, and is it possible to zoom to their location? Also, any advice with using a general in combat and keeping him alive?

The General (at least in the ERE) is in the frontline centre of his unit. You will have to manually zoom in. He is often wearing a cloak and his face actually looks like the one in the bottom left hand corner pic. Interestingly, when you make his unit use the `testudo,` he vanishes into the middle of the unit (I have a hard time seeing him), it`s a great formation to use when the enemy tries to sniper shoot him.

Also click the General unit card twice and that will zoom you to his location.

p.s. lol, I might as explain explain how i do it!

When I set a general army formation, I always move my General`s unit to the rear and back. before starting, I make sure I know which one is the General`s unit.
In combat, I keep him to the back again. When the enemy get close, I put him into attacking or defending testudo (this keeps him alive). I keep him away from any fighting and will only put him into combat if the battle is an obvious win (his General is dead) or I have no choice (only unit left to help). Sometimes I don`t engage my General even if the enemy general is dead as it`s possible your General could still die. I use his rally and encouragement button often, but I refuse to use the whip.

If they're in a general's unit, i.e. Germanic Nobles or Magister Militum, the general will always be in the dead centre of the front rank. If its a dismounted unit, he will be the left of the standard bearer (looking at it from the front). As for 'captains' it depends. On Limatanei I think it is, the general is at the back of the unit, but its mostly the same as above. In terms of general placement its been the same since Empire.
