    Default New laptop for Attila

So, I've been playing Attila on an ultraportable with a Intel HD 4000 integrated chip and its been great, but not performance wise, so I've decided to buy a new laptop. The ASUS G751 with a 2,5GHz Core i7, turboboost to 3,5GHz, 16GB RAM, SSD and Nvidia GTX 980M 4GB video card. Now I have a couple of questions.

One, the pc can be upgraded from 16GB RAM to either 24 or 32GBs. Is that upgrade necessary for Attila? Will it improve performance?

Second, what graphics settings can I expect to use with this system? Can it play Attila at say 1080p and High settings, no AA?

PC is already ordered and payed for, so no use in bashing my choice of laptop It will arrive in a couple of days I'm hoping...

The GTX 980M isn't quite on par with the GTX 980 desktop counterpart, but that wont stop you from running it with the max quality preset at 1080P. Going over 16GB of RAM wont improve gaming performance whatsoever.

Basically no matter what hardware you have you aren't going to be playing Attila with high/ultra settings and a decent framerate (60 fps). Sadly it really comes down to crappy hardware/software optimization by CA. I've got an i5 and a r9 290x in my desktop and i drop to 30 fps in most battles, especially sieges. I've set most settings on performance/ max performance and little or no AA most of the time. My desktop will be able to max out GTA 5 when it comes out but can't get anywhere near good enough fps in Attila for my standards.

You're laptop will be great for most other new games though, and should last you for a couple of years. I'd highly recommend though that the next time you upgrade your system you buy a desktop. With the money you'll save for equivalent+ performance you can buy a crappy laptop for everyday use.

Also like the other guy said above, this game's engine only allows your computer to use 4 gigs of ram so don't bother upgrading that unless you're doing video editing or something else.

Imho, if u don't play multiplayer, Rome 2 and Attila are best played at a capped framerate of 24-30, maybe max 40 fps. That's because when u zoom in on many units fps rate will always drop to 20fps or even lower anyway, almost independent of settings (removing shadows helps though) and hardware (not even a $1000 5Ghz 5960X CPU will guarantee u > 20fps).

A capped framerate will give u a smoother experience than a slightly higher one which fluctuates a lot. So 30 fps capped are usually smoother than for example 35 fps - 50 fps with a lot of fluctuations. The cap must just be low enough so that the framerate doesn't drop much lower frequently.

And a lower base framerate will allow u to have better graphics which I find quite an important part of the TW experience personally because I like the cinematic experience TW games can give u

There are several tools which can limit the framerate. I prefer to use the pretty popular MSI-Afterburner tool. It works with essentially every video card.

I actually made a post quite a while ago for Empire with more detailed instructions and a link to a youtube video. The link and advice are still valid:

In Empire, limiting the framerate had also the nice effect of making the scrolling on the campaign map much smoother.

Another advantage of a framerate cap in general is that the GPU has to work less, produces less heat and is quieter that way.

    Congrats, man.

I'm just happy to get 15fps with my 9800GT. It's looks like poop, but meh. It'll just make the day I get an awesome machine even more special.
