Am I the only one who thinks fort battles are boring, and that forts are not that much of an advantage?
I think forts should upgrade into more fortified levels with gates and walkable walls in relation to their duration on the map.

I wish we could have permanent/upgradable forts as well. I miss this feature from Medieval 2 Total War.![]()

It would be nice to a be able to construct permanent stone fortifications, especially on eastern frontier with Persians and nomadic Arabs etc. An example is the monastery of Catherine in Sinai, the walls are Roman fortifications built to protect garrison and road, during reign of Justinian I
Here is an earlier fort built during Diocletian's reign in Jordan dessert.

These are virtually little castles. It always surprises me how the middle ages are always cited as the main period of fortification building whereas they were probably even more crucial in ancient times. It probably boils down to innovations like crennalations and port culliss' etc which are technically what seperates a "castle" from a "fort".
Good stuff there Gaius Antiochus Philopappos!![]()
I dunno they're pretty useful.
As the WRE I fought stacks of Huns using Forts. I would set up traps and then line the openings with testudo infantry. When the enemy comes I just have to hold the line because the AI usually only focuses on the 3-4 openings it's facing.
The reason they're useful is because those towers are powerful and you can't get to them without going through the openings.
I defeated 4 Huns with 2 legions in the fort. One legion in the fort and the other legion outside for support but eventually I threw everyone into the fort.
In regards to Sassanids I did the same thing, 1 legion against 3-4 Sassanid stacks and I won.
Those towers deck out some serious damage and unlimited ammo. So long as you take out any of their long range artillery you got it made so long as you can hold the line.
I don`t think they`re that bad. They`ve allowed me to win several battles where otherwise I would`ve lost. They prevent a larger force enemy army from being able to bring all its power on a smaller in one go. They also provide caltrops and horse traps which have killed the enemy General at least once so far. I wouldn`t have stood a chance on an open field.
However, being upgradable to permanent Forts I would like also.
@MathiasofAthens they were archaeological examples of Roman forts of the era, not let's literally put these in the game.
But it would nevertheless be good in my opinion to have such a thing built. It worked fine in MedII

When i saw the hordes with buildings, population and a tax toggle i got my hopes up, and i am still hoping something could be done for the armies aswell. A little treasury to pay the soldiers upkeep that would be filled in own territory (or with income like sacking) but would be depleted in hostile lands, a way to increase/decrease the payment for the soldiers, along with bonuses/penalties. Some way to have some "buldings" and upgrades for the armies. medics, trader, better fort, scavengers. Growth could(?) be altered to manpower for them, and they could replenish for a time even in hostile lands, healing up the wounded, arming some angry local populace and raw recruits that came from the homeland with the army. Let us hope there will be some new possiblities after CA releases the new modding tools.![]()
@gregnaar I look forward to these tools let us hope much can be done.
@Baldwin of Jerusalem If you look at the forts of the Saxon shore, not far from you! They have their crenelations intact in places, bigger than above examples, but still D shaped corner towers.
(Note! Those crenellations in that image might be medieval replacements of Roman originals)

I think we should have the ability to build permanent forts on the campaign map that extend our field of vision and can be occupied.
I also really miss the M2 style forts!!! One of the best mechanics that isn't still around. The forts were epic. I also miss the M2 style Zone of control, liked it MUCH better than the new version.![]()
Yeah, the Forts are a joke. Hopefully with the battle map editor we can at least change them to be actually useful!
One reason why forts feel weak is that you have to have an army inside. The problem is, the amount of armies you can have now is very limited. So you cant use forts like in ME2 with 2 units inside to hold of specific choke holds in map. Now the only use forts have are trying to exploit the AI idiocy and beat him when out numbered.
It's also that forts look ugly. Thin walls, tends so small..Etc
What we wish, we readily believe, and what we ourselves think, we imagine others think also
Veni, Vidi, Vici
Julius Caesar
They are a joke. The walls are not walls. They are sticks in the ground. There are fouring ways into the fort. No Gates. And the fort is too big to hold without walls or fighting platforms.
CA deliberately made them like this to force the player to fight landbattles. Or to make it easier for theing AI.
the AI.
First thing I am going to do is make forts with TED2.
Forts can be temporary and they dont have to resemble castles or hilltop fortresses but goddamn they better have fighting platforms and a garrison that is smaller than the attacking army should be able to win.
But the empire wasnt in decay. The Romans could still build proper fortifications.

I think they're like this to present an empire in decay.
