Default Wow good job guys, I'm so glad to have allies like you!

and we wonder why the ERE gets wiped out. they've been sitting like this for about 20 turns now. Judea has done more to stop the Sassanids than they have. excellent AI, I must say its probably the best I've seen in a total war game to date

I guess this explains why my armies as the Ostrogoths instantly get wiped once they're out at sea. It's easy to burn Constantinople to the ground, but morphing into boats in the Mediterranean is a bigger issue when it comes to the ERE.

their tactics would be perfect if their capitol was Rhodes. hell, I don't think a guy in a fishing boat would be able to get through that blockade lol.

Well, they are defeding the center of their empire, arent they.

Someone at CA came up with that brilliant idea to make armies like fleets so the AI wouldnt have to have separate routines for land and sea anymore.

Ahh yes. Though not as famous as it's cousin in Britain, "Hodrian's Wall", as demonstrated here, is still quite capable of keeping the savage merpeople from invading our shores.

Its just a naval blockade. On whom...I don't know.

I've noticed that, in every WRE campaign I've tried, the ERE just has constant fleets/navies making trips across the med from Rhodes to Africa...and then back. Maybe they're having fitness competitions to see who can make it there fastest? Kinda like a bleep test or running suicides?

Perhaps they are fans of Battleship, game or film or video game?

So I guess last week's patch didn't improve the CAI then?

The thing is, the normal TW ship AI of Shogun 2 worked absolutely fine. You didn`t get ships hanging out in the middle of the sea for no reason. There were never armies escaping to sea in a `wtf` way. The sea was a natural barrier - It MADE SENSE.
Then CA decided to make it `better` by this!

An idiotic decision that they, again, are too stubborn to correct even though they and everyone else can see how unimmersive, unintuitive and unrealistic it is. Even in Civ 5 armies can`t take to sea until they`ve at least discovered the ship tech.

I`d love to have a face to face talk with whoever thought of these `improvements`.

Agreed. There is no amount of "culture pack" dlc that can paper over this sort of AI, which absolutely ruins the experience of playing the game. To add insult to injury we had the exact same problem with TWR2 at release. Yet here we are again -- floating out at sea.

I don't really mind having the land to sea and sea to land army conversions in the game, from the player point of view. That being said, it is absolutely HORRIBLY implemented. I get the same result from my Eastern Roman Empire, as all it seems like it ever does is move units back and forth between Egypt and Constantinople. It's dumb, and whoever wrote the code for the AI should be fired. Like, this has been an issue since Rome 2 released. Please rewrite the AI pathfinding code for this game, because it is obviously shoddy work.

I just started a game as the Vandals, where I via the Dresden's occupation/diplomatic options mod got the Alans to join me in confederation. I was bringing the group of horde alans over from sarmatia and decided to risk it and send them through the black sea, and wouldn't you know it the ERE shows up with three transport fleets and corners mine into oblivion. the AI literally thinks the Sea is its territory and will defend it at all cost, while the ERE's actual territory can be desolated and conquered for all it cares. also, the fact that it even knew I was there in the first place, being in the middle of the black sea was pretty immersion breaking

Burning Constantinople to the ground is easy.

Don't ever go out to sea.

I struggle to figure out which is dumber: the ability for hordes to instantly morph into boats or the ERE defending the Mediterranean like it's its capital.

is it just me or was even Empire: Total War's CAI way better at things like this? . they basically should defend themselves at all cost but only rarely venture out to capture high valued targets just like the Native Americans from empire. they really shouldn't be defending the sea at all.

@Useless, thats even more ridiculous than mine!

a little off topic but still on the ai: does anyone notice that the Huns appear quite random in the game, just hanging around the steppes without attacking unless you declare war first? I seem to have that problem too.

The Huns are yet another broken feature of this game. I've also heard they constantly respawn no matter how many stacks are beaten until you kill Attila. Cue the ominous Tuvan throat singing.

ERE tends to put tons of armies in the sea nearby its cities.

But, in my games, the ERE is the only side that does this despite having a good number of settlements left (most other times I see full stacks just hanging out at sea, it's because that faction is now a horde with no settlements). WRE, Sassanids, etc. don't seem to have this problem.

I sort of think it has something to do with the nature of the ERE's home settlement... being on a strait might be messing with how the ERE AI calculates distances to enemy and friendly areas or something.

But seriously, almost no other faction seems to do this routinely... not to say the AI and embarking have been entirely fixed, as I do still occasionally see a random army floating for a few turns, but it always seems like it's only the ERE that ends up having multiple full stacks work of troops float for extended lengths of time.
