Crash on splash with "has encountered an error message"

I bought Attila when it first came out and played it for a while but then I stopped for a couple weeks and came back to it and it wouldn't open. It has the message "your drivers may be out of date: check for updates" in the launcher, and as soon as I click play it goes the the splash screen with the loading cursor with the spinning blue wheel and then after like 10 seconds it says "Total War: Attila has stopped working. Check for a solution" and then "Total War: Attila has encountered an error" and you have to click "close program"

All of my drivers are definitely up to date
I have the same problem with Shogun 2, but not Rome 2.

If anyone out there knows what the problem is, please let me know. I hat that I bought the game and was only able to play it for a month.

no mods installed at all
