how does damage work?

Someone please explain to me as simply as possible how damage works?
For example:

Thracian Oathsworn:
100 HP
30 Armor
0 Shield
25 Malee Defense

vs

Herculiani Seniores
35 Malee Attack
36 Base Attack
16 AP

Lets forget about charge here and so how does the Roman damage the Thracian? Are the armor and defense in the game as percentage? Any insight would be appreciated
