    Default Favorite Unit in Attila

Attila is a game that despite its serious AI concerns and current lack of faction diversity promises to (with a bit of patching) become one of the best Total War games ever. The currently available factions are very interesting to play, come with some great units, and it's really fun to explore the world with them.

What would you consider to be your favorite unit in Attila Total War? Mine would be the Agathyrsi Elite Warriors. While the Alani faction has some extremely questionable unit and cultural designs (Sarmatians with Mongoloid appearances, tons of Germanic units), the Agathyrsi units feel just right. They add a bit of much needed uniqueness to the Alani and they are simply beautiful to behold with their shiny scale armor and two handed falxes. I love using them as "special forces", sending them to assault enemy walls and cutting through enemy lines.

I'd have to say the Thracians that the Goths get, but I might be biased because I've always liked the Thracians historically. I especially like the Oathsworn though, and they have saved me in many multiplayer battles. They might die easy to missiles, but once they get into enemy lines, they just shred the enemy.

Otherwise it would the Francisca Heerban. They're the epitome of Frankish military power, and their axes just look awesome hurling through the air to chop the enemy to bits before closing.

Hunnic Horse Archers: cause fear, have heavy shot, are fast, have reasonable morale, and appear very early. In campaign play, I often fight a battle against a much larger enemy force, kite their units and do massive damage, and then simply withdraw from the field when the ammo is used up. So long as I don't expect a second army to come by after I click end-turn, I usually end up doing severe damage without being in almost any danger at all. And after CPU turn-taking is up, I can go right back and finish them off. Only problem is when I withdraw, click end turn, and then have a new faction declare war and immediately attack the withdrawn horde with a large force. In that case, I lose that horde. But I've learned to deal with this by how I used the other hordes to ZoC and block the areas around my prime fighting horde.

But in a single battle setting? Hmmm... probably would go with naval artillery right now. In naval battles, the naval artillery currently two-shots most ships, and it fires accurately enough that often 2 of the first 3 or 4 shots hits, especially if the target isn't moving or is fairly close. On land it's more of a toss up: if I absolutely have to win an evenly matched battle without any help from tricks on the campaign map (like using agents to lower morale or fatigue), then I'd say mounted brigands/raiders. With guerrilla deployment of cavalry, it's often possible to kill the enemy general early on if I'm willing to sacrifice the brigands/raiders. And against most rosters, this means a large number of the remaining units will take a severe morale hit (since most rosters have fewer disciplined units compared to R2, with the main exceptions being the WRE, ERE, and Sassanids, who are all more disciplined). Only tier-2 units and higher typically are disciplined/immune to fear for non-empire units. And even if the enemy general is not something I can easily kill with cavalry (as is the case when the enemy general is not itself cavalry), then I still use the brigands/raiders to quickly neutralized enemy artillery or skirmishers.

But it depends on what faction you like to play as and what DLC you have. Huscarls are also pretty good, but not everyone has the Norse tribes. So, a lot of variables. And all just IMO anyways.

EDIT: Note that I am talking exclusively about single-player in all examples. In multiplayer, it's clearly not nearly as easy to rush brigands at enemy artillery or generals. Honestly, in multiplayer I wouldn't know what to pick as the very best... a lot in MP depends on what your opponent chooses to use. Since pikes are now easily countered and elephants run amok, I have less idea what is currently over-powered... back when R2 first released, though, pikes and elephants were largely game-winners for me prior to whatever patch added Run Amok to elephants. Would have to play more MP than I have in Attila (have barely played any as of now).

I would vote for Sarmatian Warband. I have soft spot for them without much reason... Perhaps it is because they look like Romans from the East.

Germanic Warband, they look just enough rag-tag but fierce and ready to fight at the same time

I like thinking of them as dwarves. Those beards and helmets...
Favorite unit so far is Elite Agathyrsi Cavalry. reasonably easy to get and they pack quite a punch. And got horses :-) Mobility rules.

I just noticed that Germanic Spearmasters beat Eastern Armoured Legio in combat.....

So I cant really make a decision until various parts of this game have been fixed.

Always liked Thracians historically, but I've got to say Noble Gothic Lancers and Noble Germanic Horses. Taifali cavalry and Elite Vandal Raiders also gives you the impression you're dealing with elite cavalry that can change the course of an entire battle. As for best unit per price. Probably Germanic Spear-Masters.

Well I like infantry and I like vikings, and the huscarls are the best shock infantry in the game and they shred everything. As long as they don't get charged by heavy melee cav.

Thing is that they are always useful. Be it in field battles or sieges they always perform well. And unlike their counterparts uar warriors or noble thracians they appear early in the campaign too

Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

After a massive battle as the ostrogoths defending against three stacks of Roman Gauls, I fell in love with the Taifali Cavalry.
To be fair, I have to admit that my force was largely made up of tier 2 - 3 units and I was defending a river crossing, but the sheer number of legios and comitatenses spearmen was overwhelming until I cleared the second crossing with 2 Palatina defectors and 4 Taifali cavs and brought them round into the rear of the Gauls.

Which brings me to the Palatina defectors IDK I just like their look and they always offer a very decent performance. There should be a few more roman defectors/levies in some Germanic rosters to depict the Romanization those people went through

At the moment I am really enjoying the noble Suebi swordsmen though. Very effective infantry, awesome looking, nice unique shields!

Playing as the Sassanids, Sogdian Warriors and Royal Archers. I like archers that wear a lot of armor.

I'm playing as the Sassanids too, and I have a soft spot for the Soghdian Warriors. They are good, relatively cheap medium infantry that have won me a few battles.

I like the elite 2 handed units like Hetairea Guards, Huscarls, and Thracian Oathsworn. In attilla it seems easier to reinforce units, when you click a unit behind the lines to attack through your own units your engaged units will actually move aside to let them through instead of having them pile up behind. So I like to keep my 2h units behind the main line, then when I see where along the lines the enemy starts to clump up, I charge my axes straight through the line into the mass of enemies. They can rack up some serious damage.

Yeah thats exacly what I do as well. Sturdy shield wall units in front to soak the charges and precursors and then charge in with the 2 handlers and watch stuff die.
