So I'm working in a project to translate the game into another language... and when I came across this jaguar's earlobe thingy it just... welp, confused me to the most utter extent~

The whole line goes:"Jaguars' earlobes - get 'em while they're hot, they're lovely!"

This is the short description for the preserved food wagon in the nomad's community center building tree:

So as to my understanding... jaguars live in America, and their earlobes are not something that you eat...(I doubt whether they have one or not)

So I'm thinking that this thing is some kind of historical preserved food that the nomadic people ate back in the times, but no idea what is it......
Can someone shred some historical light on me with this please? That would just be much much appreciated!

"Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog. You understand it better but the frog dies in the process."

Yes, it's a reference to Life of Brian. From what I'm told, there are quite a few in Attila.

Ywch, if you're asking what Life of Brian is, I can only say that you'll have to watch the movie. If you're asking what, specifically, are jaguar's earlobes... it's not an actual thing. The food that Brian's selling is rubbish of the sort really just not fit for human consumption. It should also be noted that any of the things he's selling would be hilariously small, which also points to the buyers not getting much for their money.

Let's have a look at what he's selling:
Larks' tongues. Wrens' livers. Chaffinch brains. Jaguars' earlobes. Wolf nipple chips. Get 'em while they're hot. They're lovely. Dromedary pretzels, only half a denar. Tuscany fried bats.

Larks' tongues. Otters' noses. Ocelot spleens.

I haven't got any nuts. Sorry. I've got wrens' livers, badgers' spleens--

It's all very silly. As the exchange happens while the characters are watching a gladiator show at a Roman arena, it's safe to assume that it's a joke about the terrible quality and small amount of food you get for your money at a modern sporting event.

The long and short of it is that the only history involved here is cinema history-- a reference to a movie from a few decades ago, presumably thrown in to give older Total War players a bit of a laugh.

And point taken...... I used Ctrl+F for that script and didn't really find anything that can describe the earlobe...... and gave up on the script after that, searching for more history so I didn't read the whole thing......

I just wish the text would be bigger on high dpi screens, I really don't feel like reading too much but I guess I am missing out quite a bit.

It's a humorous allusion to the fact that the Romans (and also some other people at those time and today)
had a habit of eating things that the majority of people today would consider strange. Snails, peacock tongues, etc.
The way I understand it it was also partly a way of boasting because it often took lots of money to get some of
these dishes so only the nobility could afford the more exotic stuff.

A lot of the short descriptions in this game are jokes and references to western (Anglo-American) pop culture.

Obviously, the huns did not eat Jaguar earlobes, since Jaguars only existed in central and south america.

    It`s just a joke.

But Monty Python is an acquired taste, I suppose. probably even harder if you`re not English.

Just say it`s a silly English joke.
