Default Making archers fire in a more reasonable arc?

So, I noticed something interesting while playing the Huns yesterday. Some of my horse archers were firing volleys in the style of Medieval II's archers, where they'd fire up and over the walls, onto the heads of enemies stationed on them, rather than trying to shoot straight at them, the way they tend to in Attila. The ones in the front ranks were still doing that terrible thing where they end up wasting most of their arrows on the air a few feet above the heads of the guys on the walls, but the guys in the last few ranks were aiming up, and raining arrows down.

I noticed a heck of a lot more of the arrows fired up and over hitting, than the ones fired straight at them. I tried over and over to position them in a way that they'd just do that all the time, instead of thinking they could make a shot over a stone wall, which they never do, but haven't yet figured out how to get them to just fire their volleys the way archers are supposed to when attacking someone with cover. Anyone had any luck with this, or is this maybe something that a mod would be able to fix?

Have you tried doing this manually, I mean actually right clicking on the target??? Because sometimes this doesnt work if you just posistion your archers and let them attack on auto.

I did, and it resulted in my horse archers trying to get closer to the enemies on the walls,(With the same terrible "I can totally make this shot!" behavior.) despite them already being in range, and having already fired on them from that position when told to fire at will. Not sure what's up with archers in particular in this game. Slingers, javelinmen, and horse skirmishers perform as they should, but archers of any sort, whether they're on foot or horseback, seem to forget all of their training and try to snipe guys that are standing behind stone walls, or they try to reposition when you tell them to attack someone, instead of just shooting from the position that was working just fine for them in fire-at-will mode, against the same target.

Have you tried positioning your archers so that the enemy units is just withing the range of your archers? I've noticed that archers, onagers and basically missile troops tend to have issies hitting their target if they're too close to it.

Mod it, projectiles_tables. It's a single column, you could do it in 5 minutes.

This is because vanilla ranged has an extremely high firing elevation on almost all projectiles, they can all sky-shoot if the situation demands. This permits ranged units to almost always be in a fire-able situation, but as you said it makes for some pretty stupid mortar bombardment.

The only way to stop this is decrease the corresponding values in the files through modding. I have a mod which remove that problem if you want to check it, but it does far more than that so you may not like it, but use my values on elevation and stuff.

So, just to clarify, if I were to drop the max_elevation from 88 to say, 40, would that make the archers more likely to fire their volleys into the sky, the way they often did in Medieval 2 or Shogun 2?
