Default PETITION : Give us a Map Editor

    Hi!
I've been a modder in the pre-warscape days of total war.
The modding tools gave us the ability to make those games shine like never and even gave a reason to many to buy their games.
I tried getting into warscape modding but the lack of tools really turned me off.
Thanks to dedicated modders, people still make wonders modding lattest total war within the limitations of what we have.

I start this petition knowing it might be totaly ignored, but if people care like I do about the series, then perhaps we can get enough signatures to be noticed by CA.
And we might be able to dream again about a game we can mod within the limits of nothing else than our imaginations!

    Signature list (1):
    Drakenlorde

I ask to any of you wanting to add their signature, copy paste the signature list part, add your name to it and add 1 to the count of signatures.
    Thanks

I think you hope in vain! There's an interest there to limit the scenarios that can be created and a map editor is key to that. Attila is a fairly good "engine" and with a map editor the sky would be the limit. I don't mind paying a few bucks for scenarios. I just wish CA would do them. We could have had CA release a nice Lombard Italian campaign, instead we merely get a culture pack.
Proculus: Divine Caesar, PLEASE! What have I done? Why am I here?
    Caligula: Treason!
Proculus: Treason? I have always been loyal to you!
Caligula: [laughs insanely] That IS your treason! You're an honest man, Proculus, which means a bad Roman! Therefore, you are a traitor! Logical, hmm? Ha, ha, ha!

They will never release a map editor. That would make all the future campaign DLC's invalid.

If it is going to impact on their precious DLC sales, why not SELL the map editor? I'd happily pay £10 to be able to edit my own borders and settlements and maps and create my own campaigns.

Even more, this would definitely 100% not stop me from buying the next TW game, it would merely extend the life of the current game. Who on earth would want to pay $7.99 for three un-notable factions when we could pay more for something better?

@ Original Post: I would support a DLC for a Map editor. But even if the editor was priced at 3 pounds or 30 pounds I cant imagine CA would make a lot of money from it.

Or? They have apparently sold millions of DLCs. Assuming that is a million unique users and they sold a map editor dlc for 6 pounds they could earn 6 million pounds for all their hard work that they claim would take months to a year.

I would say that is worth it.

Shogun II received some map terrain files that allowed modders to use third party programs like 3dmax to edit the map. Prob something similar is used at CA. Regardless, there is no actual editor that was released for the map. CA said it would take months of hard work to develop and editor. They never spoke about releasing files similar to SHogun II but I assume that is because it is not possible since they claim the map files are too tied up in the codes for everything else.

Or maybe that would just make them compete harder to make better maps.

Modders can mod units. Doesnt stop CA from releasing unit packs aka faction packs.

I would pay for an editor DLC. But the question is would CA earn enough in sales?

Yeah this is never going to happen simply because it would put all DLC to shame. It's also the main reason why I haven't taken the modding community seriously since M2TW.

I always played mods that gave me a completely different experience with their own dedicated campaign maps - Rusichi, Europa Barbarorum, Danube Limes, etc. I have no interest in these "warscape" mods that play around with startpos, create units, and then break your game that CA seems to hype up for some strange reason these days.

The ability to edit the campaign map would be a great step in the right direction for these games, so sign me up,but I don't expect any tools until they are finished using warscape for new games

What modding tool for pre warscape days?

That said, yes I want a mapping tool just like Shogun 2, even if I don;t even know how to use them I still want them. At least something that let use add/remove regions.

This... maybe in couple of years from release, maybe. They learn "the lesson" from Med II and its amazing mods like SS or The Third Age.

Actually in rtw and mtw2 we weren't even supposed to be able to map at all. I distinctly recall that they had a sort of tool 'Romans Campaign Map Editor' but I don't think it was ever released. Of course there was a map editor released by the community but at most the only thing it would have done was access the proper files needed like tga for map heights, features and whatnot. In RTW2/MTW2 I have no idea what the files would be to edit or what tools you could open them with if any (other than forthcoming terrain tool editing in addition to other features), I have no doubt that it is within CA's ability to help us in this regard though. For if terrain modifications are possible it is likely just a step further for provinces seeing as we already have battle map generation and editing for every settlement in that forthcoming release...

OP read this its from latest mod summit

To begin with, in order to cut straight to what is probably the biggest point of concern for many of you who were waiting for news from the summit, we had a talk about how completely reworking the Campaign Map is not a possibility at this stage. The reasoning for this is pretty simple: the in-house tools used to actually create all the logic behind the Campaign Map are very much tied up with the entire codebase of the game. Quite obviously, CA are not going to make their code available generally, and the work required in order to create solid tools separate from this would, by CA's own estimate, roughly take 18 months of work for a team of their key developers. That would be 18 months in which those members would not be able to work on new games, create new features, improve existing functionality or stomp on bugs.

CA claims that this is basically impossible due to the amount of work it would require on their part. While I'd love to see full map tools (the ones announced at the mod summit don't hack it to me, though they have some usefulness), and I'd sign a petition, I suppose, I don't think it is going to matter. Maybe CA is being honest. Maybe they aren't. But we aren't going to change their minds.

It's hilarious that people are completely ignoring Crazii's post about Shogun 2 except one it's like they're in complete ignorance.

As for those worshipping modders who claim the modders can do better than CA's DLC if that was true then those modders would be off making games that rival CA's but they don't because guess what? In reality they are simply working off of CA's works and people don't even bother giving the proper credits.

And for those who don't realize it CA is actually a business company that's out to make money, they are not some charity group.

Campaign map in STW2 can be edited as modder of Imjin War mod did - same will probably not be possible with Attila cuz campaign map translates directly on battlefield, but even in STW2 there is no modding tool for this editing - modder used 3dmax to do that. Not that i wouldn't try to diminish his work which is great, but level of detail on this added portion of the map its nowhere near what CA can do.

Who is claiming they can do better?

Everyone has different opinions on how the map should be and that is one area that a lot of people would like to mod. Personally I would want at least 300-400 regions on the map. Mostly, minor villages. Thats my playing style. But CA forces us to play by their "gameplay" balance. I believe more regions would add to replayability.
