Two player factions

Quick question - has it ever been possible in a Total War game to mod two factions to be playable in one campaign? I.e I can be both the Western and Eastern Roman Empire in one campaign? Would be an awesome feature, but seems like this kind of thing would be hardcoded.

you could play 2 factions at once in MTW2 kingdoms

Yes, it was only possible in MTW. You could actually play as all factions. It was a great fun to gather 3-4 friends, get lots of beer and by the end of the day everyone hated eachother as everyone were ploting against eachother xD

what about swtching the faction you control mid game then switch back a few turns later. This would be great for times when you are at war with the AI and they are just to stupid to put a coordinated attack together.
