Icon14 My Official review of ATILLA:Total War

Hello, my name is Legio COmitatenses!

As it suggests, I'm quite a fan of the series.

It's been quite a while since I last checked up, been busy plaing the ga me. - And must say - astonished by it. The atmosphere, the faction symbols and unit mechanics are all just perfect, as is the grand view of Rome and Counstantinoupole

    ...
    The things I liked:
    - excellent representation of the Roman empire
    - excellent unit models especially for Western Roman empire
    - Unique city models
    - dynamic campaign < seriously one of the most enjoyable aspects of the ga me

    The things that were dissapointing:
    - constant crashes
    - some Units like the Bosphoran infantry are overpowered
    - Huns are demonized and overpowered
    - poor representation of SARMATIANS (too few units and even they had Hunnic/Mongoloid features)

    What we want next:
    - an Expansion of Attila: Total War featuring Justinian's era to 800s with a new approach to the Eastern ROman Empire
    - Inclusion of Slavic, Sarmatian and Baltic factions into the game

    - When you make Medieval 3 make sure you keep the Eastern Roman empire unique and well represented within the game.
    No purple Byzantines.

We don't want ahistorical purple mob of the "Byzantines",
we also want the correctly represented Eastern Roman Empire in the upcoming Medieval 3 game.

Oh, and Thank you! We enjoyed both Rome 2 and Attila!

    ...
The most obvious thing you are going to make Medieval 3 next as speculated above,
but perhaps the new city artilery mechanics and battlefield deployables are a hint, that a World War I TW game is coming next?

I am Legio Comitatenses! on TWC.

But actually I like to see you are Iranian. Same here, a proud Iranian and a fan of the Roman faction. The Sassanids in Attila were in my oppinion a bit poorly done if compared to the Roman empire, I liked the eleete Pushtigban units though,

but the colour combination of purple - greenish yellow - was not to my liking,

I'd preffer a white-scarlet red colour combination for the Sassanids (Iranian empire)

Welcome to the forum Legio Comititenses. I personally love that the Huns are overpowered in the game. Let's be frank here, the game is called ATTILA. I always felt that in BI the Huns weren't very threatening and kinda burnt themselves out after the early game.

I love Bosphoran infantry and kinda wish that the Alans and Eastern Roman Empire were capable of recruiting them as well. The Huns historically had some pretty good infantry, especially as they began absorbing so many different cultures and tribes.

Couldn't agree with you more concerning the Sarmatians. It's so immersion breaking that it's almost depressing. We go into deep detail about it here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...-not-Mongoloid

I'm not a big fan of the purple Palaiologos-era double headed eagle "Byzantine" Eastern Roman Empire that we see in Rome 2 but It's something that I can live with. I would love to see a Justinian era campaign where the map is more "calm" and factions are more settled, and I would love nothing more than to see the Sarmatians, Slavs, and Balts fleshed out in Attila.

SIC EST DOMINE! EST PLVRALIS MAIESTATIS.

Actually it's my (our) personal style. We wrote as such since the day I was a kid in the name of the good lord, before we even knew what "plvralis maiestatis" means. It is in our blood since we are the civilesed, the rigtcheous, the strong! The majestic and the plural men of the Roman Empire. Men! Form testudo and attack!

    - For the savior!
    The unwashed bastards!

What's the problem if its called Byzantine Empire? Why should we call them how they addressed themselves in their time? Their legal system was independently improved from the Roman laws; and their fighting style and troop composition was far from the heavy infantry focused as Romans and their religion was also different. Also their architecture. AND; they also looked at themselves as the heirs of the Greek traditions; besides Roman ones. So with so many differences; why not call them Byzantines? IMO; not calling the Byzantines Byzantines is simply...................byzantine!

Well... it's bad for the atmosphere.

But other than the disgust and hate for the wrong word "byzantine", I completely agree with you. So + rep

Their religion and Greek customs MUST be represented correctly as you say in any possible upcoming Total War. They MUST be authentic - that means ONLY THE EMPEROR can wear a purple dress, regular soldiers better have some other colour on themselves - I suggest scarlet red along with other colours.

IMO they should not be called "Byzantine empire" in a new Medieval 3 game, better call themselves as they adressed themselves simply "Roman Empire"

They are an equal faction. Let us show that the map is not west-centerd but balanced. Then we could also call the "Holy Roman Empire" - "Frangia" ar the Eastern Romans called the HRE, but I'm sure CA will not call the HRE "Frankia" , so why call the Roman Empire "bayzantium"

Wait; don't tell me; Attila TW has them speaking like Romans? With no emphasis on their Greek side? Like; in generals' speeches or anything along those flavour-text like lines? So sad. The purple is weird as well. Byzantines had no attachment to that color at all. Especially the emperor. In fact; crimson was the most powerful color in the Byzantine Empire. The color crimson was reserved only for the emperor to wear; and all the places where the royal families were raised were covered in crimson decorations. The places where royal family members were born were covered with crimson tiles. Hence why some people from the Byzantine royal family are called Porphyry-borns.

I'd really like to hear a general hear saying something along the lines of ''Our allies today are our fellow Romans; who defeated our glorious ancestors in battle; and now need our help. As open minded Greeks; we will help our allies unbiased about what they did in the past; for the Barbarian scourge is the threat trying to wipe out civilization; like the foolish Persians tried to vanquish Alexander...............'' Something like that would bee great to hear XD

I get what you're saying; and fully agree they should be given an historically internationally accepted term that is not east or west biased.

They speak like posh Englishmen. No Latin or Greek accent. Some would say "history hijacking?", it's not quite right though

Well I agree... the game thus looks Anglo-Saxon centered, and the Romans have Z Anglo-Saxon accents. ...

BUT, to an extent I think this is OK,

the "posh Englishman" to "renaisance Italian" accent of the Romans fits the faction. They are "cultured and posh" and at the same time Latin "homes universali" ... The Roman empire was not just in Italia but in all of Europe, so to some extent such voice acting fits.

But sure, I would preffer original Greek and Latin voice acting:

    "Menaolatoi!" "Kata polemion foreite!"
"Legio ton Komitaton!" "Ney Strataigos!" "Strataigos!" "Ainte!" "Yar!"

"Armigieri Def en sores!" "Sic domine!" "Expvgnate istos!!!!!!"
    "Roma Invicta!!!111"

The British Romans were a Rome 2 thing as well. If they weren't gonna do accents (due to lack of resources or smth); they could've at least made sure they were writing the speeches better.

I stand corrected! I didn't know that at all! I'd read a history book stating the emperors wore red; but don't know if its in combination with purple. So in that case, I too second the turning of the emperor only into purple! On a side note; do those robes worn by Justinian and Theodora seem like purple to you? Purple is one of the colors which vary most from person to person's eyesight; and even cameras of different brands produce images with radically different purples. I see only red for both of them.

These dyes were too expensive for mosaics, so they used different dyes. From the wiki it also says that tyrian purple could range from rose to red to to purple to blue depending on the species of snails used and the mixture of the different snails. Purple seemed to have been the most prized color....
