Default Getting rid of settlement razing?

Am I the only one who sort of wants the 'raze settlement' option out of the game? I mean, yes its cool to have the choice to do so, and yes it is historic and goes with the apocalyptic theme of the game, but several of my playthroughs have been ruined by the NPCs being hell bent on turning the world map into an inhospitable wasteland and I'm not even talking about the Huns.

In one game of mine on the 'hard' difficulty setting single settlement in Gaul was razed by migrating Germanic tribes, making one part of the map completely useless with nobody being able to afford rebuilding them until late in the game. I guess that it adds a sort of tactical angle to the late game when you have to choose whether or not you want to revive settlements, but most of the time razing just sort of hinders the game. A mod that would only enable give the player the option to raze settlements would be nice as a compromise perhaps, or am I the only one who thinks this?

Picture related, AI handiwork from my last game.

I found that the AI, as well as myself, went totally overboard when it comes to razeing provinces in the retail version. After Patch 1 i started a new campaign just to see how and if the AI uses a more sensible and forelooking approach to razeing, and it really seems to be the case.

In rare circumstances there ist still a raze decision to be seen here and there, but way less than in the retail version. For me the mechanic is welcome, having that option adds to the overall experience, it just mustn't be overused. Glady we have a base of talented and dedicated modders who are able to disable such functions in the game if you wish, as iloveyourz stated.

Yea, it happens way too much. The effect also looks stupid and does not give one the feeling of a land being raised but nuked. It also starts to feel silly. If you want the AI faction to be bad ass, let it raze when it needs to and seldom, mostly to make a point ie, add fear to other peoples he will attack. If I remember right this actually made cities open their doors to Attila rather than give him the trouble of siegeing which is when the real wrath happened. The AI needs to seriously tone down on this- maybe to at least half the raising or a third of it - maybe as an option?.

started a new campaign after the new patch, there are some positive changes in campaign map. both in how ai uses raze option and the way your puppet states act.

Ja, i think it's much better now, exceptions are the huns, but other ai factions do it rarely. They resettle as well. I like it. At the moment, when it comes to razing, i'm the only insane one... just turtled in italy with WRE.

I like razing. The nuclear bomb effect is a bit too melodramatic, but the destruction of settlements and provinces was something the Romans visited on Germanic territories they had no wish to settle. The stock rate for colonising a razed province is too high. If you reduce it a lot the ai will quickly repopulate razed lands.

Agreed. I think this is the real issue with this mechanic. Should probably cost something like 50-70% of what it currently does.

Radious does a good job of limiting razing as an offensive action to the Huns and lowering cost of resettling so factions are enthusiastic to resettle razed regions.

Here's a mod for you if you just want this change and not all of the changes Radious makes.

There's two files in this zip, one that makes only huns able to raze settlements (which is one Radious does) and one that makes no one able to raze settlements. Only activate one of them.
