Shock vs Melee Cav

Simple question, barely worthy of a thread. I can't seem to figure out when Melee cav is worth it. Their stats are nearly identical to Shock cav and I don't see a use for them when Shock cav can stand up to the best of infantry units. Could someone clear up their uses in DEI compared to Shock?

Historically there was no division for Melee and Shock cav as both types served for the same purposes. It if artificial divison created by CA. All of the top ancient cav units were what we would call in Rome 2 mechanics a shock cavalry.

So if I understand correctly it's a distinction I should just ignore and I should rather treat ALL cavalry as a single entity?

Yep

Although melee cav due to usage of shields is a bit more durable vs missile fire, but for ultra shock cav it does not matter, as top cataphracts armours have bonus vs missiles (like in the case of Renaissance knights, cataphracts were soo heavy, that they simply did not need a shield, which would only make them heavier).

Yes, there will be, but not in terms of big game changing mechanics, only stats fixes here and there or some attribute changes.

I'm really OCD with regards to balance, so that's great news

Should I start a new campaign now this weekend or is it soon enough that I might as well wait? (don't mind me.. just fishing for info :p )

Yeah KAM is right. There wasn't a classification in history

. Just shock cavalry has better armour and better charging stats. And i tested with KAM's mod that a unit of shock cavalry slaughters 3 unit of melee.
