Icon5 Game difficulty leve for ERE - suggest please

Am I right thinking that "Normal" is just not giving any penalties/bonuses to player/AI while changing it to higher level makes not only campaign itself for the player harder but also making his troops weaker in battle? Because I've tested "Very hard" in my Eastern Roman practice campaign a bit and I'm getting a feeling that even weak barbarian units have too much of morale and fighting capabilities compared to my legions (which is quite weird). As there's no separate difficulty levels for campaign and battles as it was in Rome or Medieval 2 for example, what can you suggest for me to use for the new Eastern Roman campaign to get a full experience of the game and difficult campaign but at the same time not feeling like legionaries are fighting like peasants? Keep "Normal"? Or "Hard" will be quite realistic as well?

Higher diff levels gives morale and other stat boost to enemy units. Also there is separate diff levels for campaign and battles, when you start your campaign hit escape and chose campaign settings, there you will find it. I usually play VH+normal combat difficulty with some combat overhaul mods

How can you change difficulty separately between battles and campaign map? There is no such options under campaign settings

You have to start the campaign and go to options menu from the campaign map not the main menu. Choose campaign settings and you will see a difficulty slider for battles. I believe it was the same for RTW2.

Ah, thank you , I didn't play Rome 2, so I was used to having to decide it at the beginning of the campaign. Why did they change it? Seems very counter intuitive and I probably would have never found it if I didn't read this post.

I'm playing with Radious Mod so I think VH campaign and normal battles should work? Because VH battles seem to be too much uber-powered in favor of filthy barbarians

You will have no problems playing on VH/M, in fact, there are some mods, like DeI for Rome II, that modders recommend using Medium for battles.

You can try to go Hard or very hard (for campaign map) and Normal (for battle map). I've been playing ERE on this settings and I got mixed feelings, I love and hate this campaign, and also there's moments I want to punch the screen. If you want a couple of tips, eliminate your "allies" if you have the chance because they will backstab you, also dont "subjugate' any factions for the same reason (they will attack you sooner or later).

I always play battles on normal, but I have done ERE on both Hard and Normal for campaign.
I have found that the campaign in hard is a struggle for survival. Challenging and fun though occaisionally frustrating. An important key is to fight as many of the battles against hordes personally rather than auto resolve. You will lose alot of the them but cause more casualties than auto resolve. Since the hordes cannot replenish this helps weaken them to the point one of your field armies can wipe them out without suffering too many casualties of your own. Also plan your settlement builds as much as possible to maximize income as money is difficult to come by with the lack of trade. Watch the video posted on this site about optimizing food and squalor if you want some tips. You also have the option to demand money from the WRE whenever they ask you to join a war. It is a good way to get by while they survive as WRE pays well but it will make you very unpopular in the long run so prepare for a multi side war if you do this.

On normal I broke the alliance with the WRE early keeping only trade relations. I am rich but bored as I am not nearly as hated and the Sassanids never delcared war on me thus there is little challenge so far. I haven't tried it yet, but the trick may be to play on hard but not join the WRE in every war thus allowing you to perhaps hold off the Sassanids and their puppets until you can safely manage a multi front war.

In short go Hard if you are familiar with TW games but plan ahead and be prepared for setbacks. If you are not familiar with TW games, try normal to get used to it then restart on Hard once you are comfortable for a fun challenge.

I'm playing on legendary and the battles are not that different. It's key to kill their general. After that the whole army cripple. Actually I think that killing the general on legendary impact the enemy mucho more than on easier levels. Same for player.

VH or maybe hard with normal battles. The key for me is to leave two or three Legions doing nothing, but covering the East against the Sassanids and satrapies, local rebel squashing excepted. If they are handled badly any difficulty is too hard. Their empire including satrapies is of a vast depth.

Guys, I've just decided to start a new campaign but I can't find any "battles difficulty" slider, only that general one which is shown when you choose your faction. Options below also only allow to change victory conditions, battle limit and other minor stuff, but there's no way there to set separate difficulty levels for campaign and battles. Captain Obvious help required!

When you start the game, ESCAPE then find campaign settings or something like that. You have the battle difficulty slider there.

I think there are now hidden battle stat bonuses for the Ai... At least I couldn't find any in the db

tables (the values where on zero). But on harder difficulties. The campaign Ai gets even more boni...

you can check the exact values in the campaign_difficulty_ (don't know the whole name) and the battle_difficulty _(don't know the whole name ether but as I said the second table is empty...

to see those tables you need the pack file manager and open the data.pack in the Attila data folder and in this pack you will find these tables under db
