Question about battle controls

So I've played pretty much every total war game and never had this issue until now. When I select a group of units on the battlefield and try to position them by right clicking and dragging where I want them, they appear to be locked into some kind of battle formation and I can't get them out of it unless I select and position units individually. It seems worse with cavalry. I select 2 units and try to position them at one side of my forces. When I right click and drag, they are locked in a formation where they are like 500 yards apart and I can't change the shape of their formation either. If I individually select them, I can position them wherever and spread them out or form a tight square. But more than one, no.

I'm sure it's something stupid like some little box I've got to check or uncheck, but I can't seem to find it. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

You can try to group your army/units by pressing CTRL + G, that should provide a dynamic group control. Hope that helps^^

I do group them with CTRL G. The problem is with positioning multiple troops with a right click and drag/drop. They are locked in this formation where they are a mile apart. Maybe I'm not explaining it right. It's like if you are trying to position troops to guard a gate. You right click and drag to fit the size of the gate. It works fine with one unit, and in every other total war I've been able to do it with multiple units. But somehow it's not letting me do it now. It's like if you select your entire army and click an army group formation. They all line up respectively. Well my troops are somehow locked into that formation even when I only select a few troops.
