Default What determines the attractiveness of a Regular Tribute offer?

When offering a regular tribute, as far as I understand, the more turns you offer to pay -even if the payment per turn remains the same- the other party is more likely to refuse you. Somewhat strange logic, but I suppose they assume lengthening the offer makes it sound less trustable.

What I don't get is, even increasing the amount of money you pay per turn, while keeping the turn number intact decreases the attractiveness of the offer. Why? Is it a bug, or does it have some twisted logic behind it? Is it a trust issue again? I would understand that if I had mediocre wealth with a fragile economy, but I don't.

If it is a bug, is there a fix to it? If not, I suppose regular tribute is a useless diplomacy option when your faction is untrustworthy.

Far from answering your question, the only time I experienced paying tribute was in my mayan campaign, in the Americas.
having begun the attack on the aztec superpower, I worried about the huge stacks my spies saw. I sent an emissary to the tarascans, allies, northwest of the enemy, with the promise of one thousand florins per semester, for five years, if they attacked the aztecs. They accepted, and I was glad. It's remarkable to me because I'm a cheap-ass and a miser. Now, if they withstood their part of the bargain... I can't tell you; my spies are either stalking the armies next to mine or creating dissent in Tenochtitlan and another city whatshername. There's movement over the dak horizon, and sometimes I hear the clash of arms; to that, the omens are unclear.

I think the logic behind the AI's attitude towards regular tribute is that it is a promise of money, not cash in hand. You, as the party bargining for whatever, can then cut off the flow of money once you've got what you have asked for.

I recommend reading Vampiresbane's Guide to Diplomacy, which has a good section on tribute and gifts.

Ah, thanks. just had a look at it. It appears this issue is listed among the "weird things" that can't be explained well.

I tend to offer 20 turns and they tend to accept that and then increase it several turns later if I want to.
