Hey all,

The Western Roman Empire is, in my experience, one of the hardest campaigns in Total War history. Therefore, I've taken a lot of the strategies stated on this and other forums and have tried to combine them into a grand strategy that I'll be streaming from 9 AM to 12 PM all week and uploading on Youtube. Tactics incorporated so far:

Scorched Earth: Razed Africa, Gaul, future Austria, Britannia. Kept Iberia and Italy, plus south Gaul to connect the two.
Asked AI to join wars: Franks joined against Saxons, Geats against Jutes, etc. Works pretty well.
Focus on happiness/sanitation first, economy next.
Keep four armies: two for Italy, two for Iberia.
Fight ALL the battles!: You can win about eighty percent of the sieges if you fight them yourself! Strategies for sieges shown in video.

Tips from another post of me:

"[...] Even on Legendary, this can be avoided by handing out gifts to neighbouring factions every other turn. Even as WRE on Legendary, I managed to keep good relations with half of the Germanic tribes, as well as some of the Hordes. They are fighting each other now, and even after 400AD I still have control over Italia, Ibera, Gaul, North Africa, and most of Illyria. The (edit) Maurians fight the Garamantians with me, the Franks help me against Saxons and Alamans, the Gaets are at war with the Jutes, the Visigoths against Hordes in Illyria, the Langobards and Marcomanni are also up against the Quadians, Iazygez and Suebians are destroyed, Ostrogoths are severely weakened, the Gallic uprising has been crushed. Divide et Impera.

If you neglect diplomacy and do not invest enough dinarii into it, then anyone will have bad results in the long run. In the lategame, I've been chased through half the map when playing the Huns and going to war recklessly with almost everyone, so I can see what has been happening to you. Make sure to treat diplomacy with 1200-1800 per turn if you can. If you lack the money at the start, deconstruct chosen buildings to get it. As WRE or ERE, it is even more important than for other factions. Good relations are phenomically more important than just relying on non-aggression-pacts. Common enemies, trade, marriages, gifts, military access, all the way up to defensive alliances, are the key to counterbalance your Imperium's diplomacy penalties."

Also, avoid razing anything, the PO penalty will lead to rebellions everywhere very quickly. Deconstructing buildings is okay though. I didn't raze a single settlement, not even in Britannia. Regarding the diplomacy, you seem to use the right approach - generally it can be said, "The Roman Empire does not win its wars alone"

Oh, another hint before I forget:

For PO issues and to fight any possible uprisings, do not use fullstack armies. 6-7 units is enough. "A large army not conquering is wasted gold".

Thanks for the tips Ritter! We already razed it before I read your post. We did deal with rebellions as expected, but they were pretty easy to put down within a turn or two. Now the situation is totally under control, and on turn 15 we're making 10 - 15K with four full stacks and a fifth being built up! I'll be streaming all day today if you want to join to give real time advice.

Didn't you have like -160 PO when you abandoned Gaul, Brittania, Raetia et Noricum, Pannonia, and Dalmatia?

Indeed. But it bounces back up in a few turns (about four or so).
