They're tank units but why not just get the other counterpart like the Palatina? Better stats and better at tanking. The only thing that these units have are missiles which are useless if your tanking with a shield wall.

why are u complaining about unit divisibility - does it confuses u so much?
War is Hell, and I'm the Devil!
Cause you get legios to start without having to build or research very much. Early unit, kind of like the old Hastati that turn into legions.
I actually find the missiles to be extraordinarily useful.
I use Legio for the flanks, set to OFF for autofire, and then Palatina, etc... to hold the middle.
If you can get a unit of Legio/etc on the flank and behind the enemy units, set autofire back on... and boom you can kill anywhere from 40-120 units before your units even engage forces from behind, making your charge even more effective.
You can recruit Palatina?
I'm at about 406 AD and haven't seen them yet? Legio C are available in about every province and look wicked. Tandem with some of those Lancearii Spearmen and Cav mercs and you're golden.
Cohors/Legio/Legio Comitatensis are line infantry, they can form defensive testudo that can protect them from enemy cavalry charges.
Palatina/Protectores Domestici/Armigeri Defensores/Elite Palatina
They're shock infantry, much more effective against other infantry. Their attacking testudo gives them a +15 against infantry, and their charge bonus (whilest meager compared to other infantry units) is better then the more defensive legionnaires. However they're most susceptible to cavalry charges.
Unite diversity is a good thing, even though they may overlap a little sometimes.
