Video showing gate hacking in ATW.
Sorry I have a bit of a cold.
Second video showing the AI trying to use gate hacking. Nice and buggy.

Seems alright to me. Especially if you don't mass rush the gate and hence have terrible blobbing. It's slow and costly, but if I'm really desperate to get in its an option. I'm okay with it. Better than just standing and chucking torches for sure.

Sure it would make a more historically authentic sieges but then again I am not sure how enjoyable majority of the players would find defending against a constantly assaulting enemy. If it was in the players power to destroy the enemy siege equipment and make them retreat, it could also become boring and repetitive to start all over again the deployment process and wait for the approaching enemy.

I'm enjoying the huge butt-shaped swarm of troops that starts forming at about 1:30. Quite symbolic of the gate-hacking fix, to be honest. It looks like arse.

Nice video. In case, you have trouble at posting a YT video in TWC do the following: Copy the video's url and then paste it inside the YT brackets, but you should delete it, leaving only the part after the "=". For example, your video should have been posted like that (without the asterisks, of course): [YOUTUBE*]u7y2W0nLsPU[/YOUTUBE*]
Its better yes, For the AI its a last resort "costly" and they wont send 10 units at ones because thats not needed those extra units dont do extra damage they only get killed by arrows and oil. So yes its better but not the way you show it because thats just sending 10 units on a blob onder the oil and arrows..![]()

But technically it works. Your "much better army" (your own words) got wrecked hardcore with boiling oil, so...
Btw. i don't think you destroyed it, the AI simply opened the gate by ordering a sally to the troops assembled in front of the gate.
The pressing orgy at the gate looks rather hilarious, but i don't think that's so bad.
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. The laughing and disbelief in the commentary made it even better - "what the hell, CA??"
Of course, it's pretty sad when you actually consider what's going on. And it's downright stupid when you consider why things are even like this at all:
WHY??? Why does there need to be a way in when the AI doesn't have siege equipment?? It's over. The assault has failed, the army doesn't have the means to break through. It's just completely mind-boggling why the AI have to be able to assault a city when they don't have the means to do so. If they can't get in then they can't get in, have the battle be won by the defenders and have the attacking army retreat on the campaign map. It's really that simple, why CA don't just do that is beyond me.Torching settlement gates has been replaced with the ability to hack them down with melee attacks. This new last-resort feature has been made in response to community feedback, and is an important mechanic to enable the attacking side to still have a chance of besieging a settlement even when their siege engines have been destroyed.
Doesn't look that bad to me. You sent 11 units to get there ass handed to them. If you did that in a normal campaign all the time you wouldn't have an army any more.

Funniest Thread in Rome 2 history: The new "you got the sandals wrong" thread.
@Aenima: Perhaps the campaign AI doesn't reliably utilize siege equipment or something. Easy solution & no scandal if you ask me.
But since the early days of Rome 2 that's no longer the case - CA have patched and patched the siege AI endlessly to make it so.
As for easy solution/no scandal, I'd have to disagree completely; if the attacker is being shot and boiled to death whilst doing this, and it takes a long time (as seen in that vid) then the AI will lose many, many men just trying to take the gates down. They'll then have an uphill battle (literally) to get into the city against an intact and fresh garrison, and will almost certainly be beaten.
If the AI can't attack the walls then it should retreat. If we accept that the AI's pathfiding/general skill at battle isn't great, especially with sieges, then I can't see how this tactic, which puts them at an even greater disadvantage, makes any sense. If anything it makes the AI's life harder. The battle should just be over when they can't get in.
I tested it: They AI sent in 2 units at a time in an attempt to destroy the gate. The gate then magically opened without being counted as open by the AI. Then it kept sending pairs of units but not at the now open gate (or any other closed gate), it sent them the open pathway around the city (recieving some more fire all the while), apparently in an attempt to open or attack the initially targeted gate from the inside.
